Tom Pidcock produced an outstanding ride to retain the men’s MTB title. He’s only ridden mtb a couple of times this year and is also in with a shout in the road race on the weekend on a course that suits him.

Never watched it before but that was pretty fun to watch. How he recovered so quickly from that flat tyre change disaster was incredible.

Awesome race. MB really is is a great sport. The last lap was pure nail biting.

Red Conway in 1960.
A softball catcher (he represented Rotorua at that sport in 1956) Dick Conway broke his finger during a game. The finger set very badly and was obviously going to suffer further damage at work, Dick Conway was a carpenter, or play, either softball or rugby. So, to avoid a problem whilst with the All Blacks in South Africa Conway had the finger amputated.

I do enjoy it when the home town produces a few big wins. Marchand in the 400 IM was insane, and the bloke in the men's K1 was also awesome.

@barbarian Leon Marchand is from Toulouse and is currently based in the US so Paris is not his home town.
His parents were Olympic swimmers.

You beat me to it. Some posters pedant meters were running hot. Home town hero sounds much catchier than home country hero. Perhaps we can all agree for the purposes of the Olympics, the terms are interchangeable?

The K1 is another excellent event to watch. The French guy was impeccable and destroyed the field with the last run of the day. I’m a bit surprised NZ doesn’t have more top class paddlers.

It's so easy to follow too, and the momentum builds as the run goes on. When it became clear the Frenchie was tracking for gold you could feel the energy ratchet up tenfold.
The women's was great as well. I love Jess Fox and she had a similarly outstanding run after qualifying 8th, then had to death ride the seven others who came to try and knock off her time.
