NZ are currently sitting second in the medal race up the first beat. If it finishes like this we will end up with a silver.
-
NZL had a great beat, right behind leaders Spain. Ireland's snafu at the start gives us a degree of comfort in silver position. Spain locked on gold barring a big mistake
@canefan yeah it’s almost a certainty now that Spain will get gold and we will get silver. Irish have royally cocked up their chances.

The McKiwis get silver. Whoop.

Currently sitting 11 on the medal table. Not bad at all.

And with serious gold and silver medals chances in the canoeing, and more in the rowing to come. Not sure how our cycling team stacks up, but they are generally a good chance for medals too

1st, 2nd and 3rd for France in the Men's BMX race. A whole French podium. The host nation enjoyed that one.

Brilliant
Gutting for Beth Schreiver
6 first place finishes in the heats, last in the final

In the athletics. The Kenyans looking 'resplendent' in their traditional orangey-yellowey-limey singlets.
Fuck off Nike. You suck. Stick to shoes.

@Rapido Yeah i think the US track uniform sucks too
All those wavy little stripes 🤮

On the athletics, there's a good chance that NZ will finish with zero medals. Walsh doesn't look like the force he once was but still a medal chance. Hamish Kerr will be a medal chance if he can hit his best height. We're strong in women's pole vault but only McCartney has a medal chance if she can hit her season's best - would be a great story after all her injury issues.
On the track, making finals will be the target. Tanner a chance in the 1,500m but not a real medal prospect. Preston who recently broke Snell's NZ record for 800m is still only ranked 23rd in the world this year which shows the standard! Geordie Beamish has the 8th best time this year for 3000m steeplechase which is awesome and he could be a chance of top 10 behind all the Ethiopians and Kenyans.

Tanner will need to run a much better race in the repercharge than in his heat.
You simply can't let yourself get forced down the back of the pack like that - especially in a slow race. You're never going to make up 10 or 15 metres on the home straight, because everyone has a decent sprint.

@antipodean A bit confused about some of these tables saw one in the Herald which had us behind Slovenia and Oz. It was based on per 10 million. I definetly know we are ahead of Oz per capita and are nearly always. The chart in the link provided says NZ has a population of 4.5 million and Fiji around 800,000, even the population of Oz seems a bit low. What is that figure based on? I am sure there is some validity to it. We will probably get a better idea at the end of the games. In Tokyo we got 20 medals, and from memory a few small nations like Jamaca were slightly ahead. We are doing well, at 12th, hopefully more to come.
