I assume for most, the swim is considered the harder discipline, most taxing on the body, while cycling likely the 'easiest'?

Swimming last would suck most in my hypothetical make the triathlon harder....

I can't believe the Olympics allows soccer to use them as a development ground. It should be either the real deal or nothing at all, or it undermines the importance of a gold medal.

That said, I think they should do a sniff test across all sports and if it's not the pinnacle, or at least on par with the pinnacle, of the sport then it should be axed. Soccer shouldn't be there, I don't think cricket should be added either as it'd be just another tournament in an already full calendar, and we already have World Cups that are the pinnacle of the sport.

        And have loads of lifesaving

At least at the amateur level

And so many DNF that the sport would die

One of the best aspects of watching the Olympics is seeing sports you don’t ordinarily get to watch (tv scheduling) or have even known existed (curling)

We don’t need to see more football, golf, tennis, cricket

While I don't think football and other pro sports like basketball should be at the Olympics it is even more strange that the men's and women's competition have different selection criteria. The mens is U23 with three over-age players while the women's has no age restriction. Add to that because the Olympics falls outside the FIFA window, clubs don't have to release players, and many didn't.

Have long thought that triathlon just massively favours the best runner given the ability to draft in the cycling, never really been clear why you wouldn’t reverse it, cycle first, then run, then swim

Maia Ramsden put on the afterburners in the last 100 m to get 6th and advance to the SF of the 1500 m.

The K2 was a little embarrassing. Kiwis about a minute behind the pace.

I think the commentators were saying something like we had to enter a team to qualify for other races. That is a bit silly.

She had her momentum checked on the final bend, as 2 of them tried to overtake a slow coach at the same time. so good recovery from that.

Down at the water, the sun's out and Dame Lisa has the guns out. Carrington and Hoskin win their K2 500m heat with relative ease

My guess has been the safety element of swimming at the start while least fatigued.

                            Easing up.

Would be some sort of record if she can notch a 6th gold gong in 5 Olympics.

If you look across the board is it any different from athletics, swimming or cycling?

There are pure speed events along with very technical events

Silver medal a huge result for the ladies. It's NZ's first women's team sprint medal in Olympic history so pretty big deal.

                                    From Stuff:
Overlooked as a contender in the team sprint by many pundits, who instead were tipping world champions Germany, China and the Netherlands to challenge Great Britain, the Kiwis were electric.

yep was hoping to read here this morning everyone made heaps of money at the TAB after reading my hot tip from CNZ coaches.. they were great odds for a medal as such outsiders.

just wish i had more than 2 bucks in my account when i put my bet on and couldn't be arsed getting out of bed to find a card to top up as one in my account had expired.. ha.

just to put this in further perspective - NZ are literally riding museum pieces in terms of bike tech. We're on a bike made in 2015 for Rio... all other teams are rolling around on bikes that are worth between 100k - 200k.. each!
we don't even have a bike sponsor.. only place you can get one of our bikes is second hand market and it's about $4k. Was actually having an amusing thought that we might be in breach of the rules - all bikes are supposed to be commercially available to buy!

                                      @canefan @WillieTheWaiter

There was piece in the Oz papers a couple weeks back about their bike - years of dev went into it, they were very happy. They put it on the market as they had to per Olympic rules , 12 months from the games, with a price tag of $100k per bike. If someone purchased, they would have been obliged to deliver - but they stipulated a 2 month delivery time on top of that crazy cost

Surprise surprise, nobody purchased the bike so nobody got to see the tech or try it out It’ll be on the market post-games for $13k

Really does seem odd that there aren’t more rules around tech other than “put it on the market”
