Always thought it was absurd to have a scrum from a not straight lineout throw.
The halfbacks put in to the resulting scrum is invariably even more crooked than the original lineout throw!
Explain the logic there...

@MiketheSnow I've always thought uncontested lineouts shouldn't be called back if not straight...probably a hangover from when we rarely contested lineouts and thought if we chose not to contest, free ball for opposition.
However, what constitutes contesting? Half hearted lift at the front after the ball has gone past?
Will it be another one for the ref to make a judgement call?

Most teams don’t go up when defending close to their own line in preparation to stop the offensive maul
This is going to make 5m line outs even more of a potent attacking option

What happens when the lineout is uncontested but the throw is so blatantly bad that it goes directly to the halfback or first five? Gives the team in possession a huge advantage over the defensive team as the ball is out in space in centrefield way quicker than it would have been from a "correct" lineout.

@Machpants above it says they have to lift someone, that I expect can be done with minimal effort if you are not genuinely contesting (ie goal line as @MiketheSnow mentions above)
If the defending team lift a teammate to compete for the ball and a throw is not deemed not straight by referee
Although, just gives the ref something else to worry about.

The lineout rule was used in the U20 WC. Still a subjective decision by the ref on contesting. I also saw it in action in a pre-season game where the ref called a not straight when it should have been play on. The AR and support staff from one of the teams had a discussion as to why it was called. He probably forgot.

Yeah that's definitely bullshit. Surely it's fucking easier to throw the ball straight if there's no contest anyway?
Just ignore offside and forward passes if they have no "material effect", and if the opposition don't charge a conversion it should be awarded regardless of if it goes between the posts.
That they say you have to lift as well makes it even more stupid. Means you can just do the quick throw to the front straight to your side.
