He's the second most decorated athlete in European championship history already.

Which is a little different to other athletes who get a silver or bronze who haven't won medals and titles at other world champs etc.....

@KiwiMurph My point is that he knows how to win.

Clearly he was gutted tonight that he couldn't quite achieve his dream of an Olympic Gold but he was also proud of the process and effort that got him so very close.

I've also got a sneaky suspicion that the British men might turn the tables on the US and win the 4x400 metres relay later in the week.

18 Gold Medals by Australia is a new record for them apparently. A fantastic achievement by their team.

He's a loser, maybe he needs to want it more.

Sad to see the steeplechase world record holder Lamecha Girma stretchered off after falling at the penultimate hurdle. He and the eventual winner were both surging and his momentum caused him to land on his head.

I always like watching steeplechase. How much higher are they than the hurdles?

@canefan any idea who designs ours? Wondering if there is a crossover with yachts, kayaks etc in terms of lightweight and aerodynamic design. Probably a no.8 expense compared to other nations. Interesting that murica don't try as hard with track cycling

Avanti made the one they're currently riding on - for Rio Olympics. We don't have a bike sponsor or the money to buy new ones.

it's a million bucks to make a mould so not something any of your average NZ carbon companies will jump on

Only partnership currently is with Southern Spars - who make the disc wheels. Probs the only leading bit of tech we've got - much lighter than the 'regular' companies wheels.

America actually has a surprising lack of velodromes, hence the lack of interest.

It's been great, maybe another one to come in the K2 500m mens where we are looking good.

Though I hate to be that guy, but we just passed our Sydney/Athens marks despite five of our gold medals in 2024 coming in sports that didn't exist in 2000 or 2004 (BMX, C1 Slalom, Canoe Cross, Skateboarding x2). So it's a bit of a technicality. Still a great Olympics though.

yep they ride Koga frames - made there. Frame about 10,000 quid. More in line with what you'd normally pay for a top end frame - the other prices you hear are just hte 'pre olympic' prices - rules are they have to be available for purchase.. they just jack the price right up so no one buys them.

Aussie frame for example will be sub 10k nz post olympics

a lot of the cost is in the custom handlebars - up to 20k alone for top guys to have them moulded to their position

I heard the Chinese had 3D printed handlebars. Considering Rocket Lab's ability to employ CAD CAM and 3D printing tech to make rockets much cheaper than their competitors, perhaps cycling NZ should call him for advice about how to 3D print their next bikes? Would look awesome to have them as a sponsor on the side of their bikes too

Not sure if it's been mentioned here, but how about the record set by the Cuban heavyweight wrestler Mijain Lopez.

First ever person to win Gold at the same individual event at FIVE straight Olympics. He won in Beijing, London, Rio, Tokyo and Paris.

Never been done at either Summer or Winter Olympics. That is a serious record to have.

that wrestling is so primal to watch. A trifle confusing at times for the uninitiated, but still not a bad watch, especially those huge units. It must be exhausting to compete in

Which brings me to one of my ideas to bring a bit of life to the Olympics: instead of being the same five events, the Modern Pentathlon should consist of five Olympic events randomly drawn at the opening ceremony.

In Paris it could be tennis, judo, equestrian, BMX and diving. In LA it might be artistic swimming, archery, taekwondo, weight lifting and surfing.

Reward the ultimate all-rounder. Don't tell me you wouldn't watch some 100kg romanian martial arts guru try and ride a barrel in Tahiti...

Spat my cereal out when I saw this in the SMH this morning

I have no qualms with the modern pentathlon as it is, or the decathlon; they can stay on the program, as long as there’s room for my idea, which I guess we can call the “random pentathlon”.

What I have in mind would bring the Games into today’s world while still staying true to its core, echoing the original Olympic spirit of holistic athleticism and strategic thinking, and adding a narrative layer throbbing with the cosmopolitan allure of a reality-television show.

My idea? Put the whole thing on shuffle.

Instead of the five standard pentathlon events, pick them at random from the whole Olympic program. Take out anything overly ambitious or unsafe, as well as all the team sports (unless there’s an individual component of a team sport we can go with. For example, instead of basketball, play a game of HORSE). Leave it to chance or, more specifically, the fateful hand of Nagi Maehashi, the woman behind RecipeTin Eats, who selects from a curated pool of tantalising possibilities.

Bastard even used my muscly Romanian as an example.

See you in court, Mr Rugari.

I just had a look at his career. Dominating would be the word to describe it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mijaín_López

We can’t finish behind Ireland on the table. They only passionately follow 3 sports. Gaelic football which is Aussie rules with a soccer ball. Hurling which is Aussie rules with a hockey stick. And English football involving Liverpool or Man U. These sports are generally enjoyed at the pub with a pint of Guinness. We are more sporty than them!

They don't follow rugby union passionately? Who are all these crazy fans at the pubs I chatted with who had those strong Irish-sounding accents?
