Hmm - how long before Russia is allowed back into the Olympics?

It's funny, I haven't noticed their absence at all. Don't know what that means.

It struck me because I saw you guys in third (an awesome achievement btw, really well done) and I thought to myself "Isn't there normally another big sporting nation up there in the Olympics" 🙂

M4L has hit on a point for me that has reoccurred throughout the games: nobody remembers the medal counts, but they remember the moments.

To take an example, Australia won 17 golds in the Sydney 2000 Olympics, but Jai Taurima our long jumper who won silver while smoking between jumps* would be a top 3 memory in people's minds.

So the things I will remember, in no order:

      Raygun the breakdancer
Fox sisters in the drink after the Slalom cross racing
      Cam McEvoy 50m freestyle win
      Surfing big barrels in Tahiti
      Dupont winning 7s gold
Curry, Lebron and KD winning it one last time
Evenopoel posing after winning Men's Road Race by 500m

*I don't think he did smoke between jumps but the urban legend has incorporated that in the decades since. In another 5-10 years he will have a cig out the side of his mouth mid-jump.

Just wait until we have to pay for it all. Coates in his great wisdom has said spending $2 billion updating the QSAC stadium is the right approach. You know, the thing that's almost never used with no public transport?

He also said "just trust us, we know what we're doing". Which screams this thing requires massive governance and oversight.

there is no plan yet because both parties are staying very very quiet until after the election.

The QSAC plan is just the worst, and watching the athletics at SdF rammed that home sans lube.

I'm not a huge Olympics guy (usually just watch the 100/200m) but I enjoyed watching all the highlights and following how NZ was going this year. I watched a lot more than usual as we had the feed running at work, and then when I'd get home I'd watch all the NZ highlights because it was Aussie Aussie Aussie all day on the CH9 feed.

Was especially good this weekend to balance out the 1 out of 3 results for my teams in the rugby and bogan rugby.

One sport nz should do better in is mountain biking. Surely we have the tracks to become world class. I mean the brits are up there.

But the one that means the most was the one out of the three!

So I understand the IOC's perspective. They have been scarred by cities like Rio spending billions of taxpayer dollars on facilities that turn into white elephants. They realised that host city model is now unsustainable.

The QSAC option is clearly a bad one, but the IOC are now red hot on the idea of utilising existing infrastructure. They can't be seen to be backing another 2B+ new stadium regardless of the arguments that clearly point to it being the right option for Brisbane.

I look forward to the Queensland premier holding a press conference in about 2 years saying they've pulled the plug, it's too expensive.

It's extra interesting since Paris has apparently covered its costs and LA is planning on reusing existing infrastructure, so Brisbane bucking the trend a bit by buying a ton of new kit.

But they aren't buying new kit (except for the swimming centre), they are just upgrading the existing shitty kit to the point where they may as well just spend the money on a new stadium.

The 'gabba is small and at the end of life. And if you have been there on a sell-out, you see the enormous problems getting in and out. I doubt it meets Olympic H&S requirements.

Yes the use of eternal Parisian landmarks in events will be hard to replicate in Brisbane.

Hats off to the French though. I read somewhere that if the photos were black and white you'd think it was part of the 1904 World's Fair or something.

My crystal ball tells me there will be plenty of spectacular areial footage of the XXXX brewery, unique close up shots of the King Wally statue. And wait till they have the swimming leg of the triathlon down the Brisbane river with the view of decade old office buildings and apartment blocks.

                            Can’t wait.

I think the right approach is to bulldoze the decaying Gabba and build a top quality 40-50k round stadium like they have in Perth. They will get year-round use out of it between the cricket and the Lions so no 'white elephant' concerns.

But apparently that's a 'megastadium' according to your dumb cvnt Premier that would be a horrendous waste of money. We'll nationalise petrol stations instead.

we've discussed it before, but the dumbest fucking thing about the temporary plan is, the 'gabba will need to be rebuilt in 2030 anyway.

It's 100% politics and it is fucking bullshit.

Optus in Perth is awesome, and should be the blueprint. As you say, the olympic stadium won't be a white elephant because the cricket and the Lions gives it year round use. they also need a bigger concert venue.

He also said "just trust us, we know what we're doing". Which screams this thing requires massive governance and oversight.

Just wait until we have to pay for it all. Coates in his great wisdom has said spending $2 billion updating the QSAC stadium is the right approach. You know, the thing that's almost never used with no public transport?

A sure sign that due diligence isn't being met. The Gabba actually needs to be rebuilt and doing so under the guise of the Olympics could provide Brisbane with modern AFL and cricket infrastructure for another 40 years for double, perhaps triple the cost. Which would make it an actual investment because unlike QSAC, it would get used.

To be fair, Paris will be hard to beat. Old world cities like Paris, London, Rome just have so many globally recognisable landmarks. Paris is a particularly well designed city. It will be interesting to see how LA do. Marathon course around Disneyland?

I'm not a huge Olympics guy (usually just watch the 100/200m) but I enjoyed watching all the highlights and following how NZ was going this year. I watched a lot more than usual as we had the feed running at work, and then when I'd get home I'd watch all the NZ highlights because it was Aussie Aussie Aussie all day on the CH9 feed.

Was especially good this weekend to balance out the 1 out of 3 results for my teams in the rugby and bogan rugby.

@Nepia Stopped watching Channel 9 news Brisbane, they went over the top with it. Considering there are a number of nationalities who live in Oz and SEQ, they must have notised this and been a bit pissed off.
