Interesting tweet. Age distribution by sport.

Some other stats I'd like them to highlight but

Not sure how they determine the vertical distribution for the individal sports, except to give impression of actual numbers.

After Melbourne bailing on hosting the Commonwealth Games, is there a chance that Brisbane will do the same on hosting the 2032 Olympic Games?

Are local politicians and Brisbane residents behind what it a massive undertaking?

Doesn't seem to generating much excitement

Neither did Sydney during the mid-90s in the lead-up to the games. Like Brisbane the focus was on cost, bureaucratic bungles, impact on residents etc etc etc

And then the flame was lit and everything was forgotten.

I expect the same will happen with Brisbane.

M4L has hit on a point for me that has reoccurred throughout the games: nobody remembers the medal counts, but they remember the moments.

Except for 84 of course. That is part of the school PE curriculum in NZ

Love the Olympics because of those moments. There were far too many NZ (and other) moments where I’d swear the air conditioner was leaking from the roof. Koh, Lisa Carrington and Hoskin, Finn Butcher, the 7s (NZ, Canada and US), Andrews in the Kierin, the Aussie 1500m runner Hull (mainly because of the call by Whately and Tamsin Lewis riding the emotion), chef Curry winning his first gold.

Thank you Stan. The best coverage of the games ever. A mix of full length and packaged up highlights that made it an enjoyable watch and gave the viewer real choice.

Actually contemplating going to LA for 2028.

The non-NZ highlights for me were:

            • Hull because I’ve followed her career so closely for years
-Hassan in the Mara and Faith in the 1500m - both such quality runners and people
            • Jakob bouncing back to win the 5000m after the disappointment of the 1500m
            • the drama of the men’s 100m
            • Sydney dominating the 400m hurdles
            • the joy of old Swedish mate winning gold then getting his 9th $100k bonus for beating his own record by 1cm

The Bball was more fun and dramatic than

An amazing run for someone who'd been out of the sport for a few years. She was elated too, surprisingly for someone that just lost.

I recall the celebrations and party when Samaranch announced Sydenee. Contrast that to Brissy's kind of 'oh, yeah, nearly forgot, we're hosting the Olympics' reaction.

True. But also the Brisbane thing was a bit of a fait accompli, while Sydney was a hotly contested battle. Ironically the thing that got us ahead of Beijing in 92 was bribing delegates from the Caribbean, so maybe the fait accompli thing was preferable even if it did have less fanfare.

@barbarian The Brisbane announcement was around the time of Covert. Can honestly say there isn't that much excitement in the South East where it will be held. If anyone remembers Expo 88, there was a real buzz around and to a lesser extent the 82 Commonwealth Games.

I actually don't hate the idea of building Olympic infrastructure on the cheap.

With full crowds for 2 weeks the TV focus will be on the events.

                          However

When the 'cheap' option of QSAC upgrade costs $1.6 billion anyway you are better off spending slightly more and having a modern stadium that will be used moving forward for AFL/cricket/other with the Gabba near the end of it's life.

@barbarian London 2012 wasn't a particularly popular concept until the Games started either.

Most of those, the vast majority of them, are bog standard shots you'd expect a tourist to get.

assuming you mean wasn't, and even that would be a massive understatement, mainly because, being British I think everyone assumed it would be a massive failure and nothing would work. Seems to be a fairly consistent view within host cities in the build up though.

I think it does an amazing thing for the national psyche if its done well and that is worth a fair chunk of cash. I'll be fascinated to see how long the pride and feel good factor lasts within Paris, could genuinely have an effect on the presidential election.

@SBW1 There a site called Greatest Sporting Country which measure performances across a number of sports in addition to the Olympics. New Zealand was actually named the sportiest nation in the world in 2016. If the table of medals is anything to go by the nations ahead of us were probably outliers who had very few competing. Any nation with at least 5 medals we pretty much blew away.

Nah this is completely different. There was genuine enthusiasm for the Sydney Games despite the bureaucratic BS and ticketing debacles. There is zero, and I mean zero interest here. Nobody wanted it and nobody would care if it's dumped. Sydney is an Olympic city, Brisbane most certainly is not.
