The Olympics should not be an RnD competition. Any equipment which has a direct influence on winning and losing, such as yachts kayaks rowing boats and cycles should all be standardised

Yes but they have regulations for bikes, boats, and the other things you mention. Regulations limit tech winning, they don't stop it. What shoe you wear is a big thing in running, same as what bike you use in cycling

Right, I wasn't aware how wide the regulations are for cycles, and the earlier talk suggested that the Brits for example were riding considerably more advanced bikes than us

Bah, not really mate. First, the difference in tech between the top 20 available running shoes is now very marginal. Second, it’s all available to buy and the cost is fuck all compared to a bike/boat.

Unless you’ve contracted yourself to Jordache, you’re probably gonna be ok

Whats more, each country does not have to spend their own money on RnD for shoes. I would expect all the top athletes get given pairs of shoes as part of their sponsorship deals too

Very curious about what Duplantis clears in training - given how consistently he pushes the record up I reckon he's clearing quite a bit higher in training but obviously trying to maximise payouts for new world records.

It's the Sergey Bubka method - he pushed it the world record up from 5.94 to 6.14 over the course of a decade, the last 10cm at a cm a time. If there is a financial reward for a record, why go for your maximum.

That would be ironic after LA 84 effectively demonstrated how to host a successful games after the disasters of Munich, Montreal and Moscow.

There will be some tough talking in the wake of this. It is bloody hard though; I recently had someone in a close social group commit suicide. The family knew of the person's struggles but we were all oblivious. In hindsight there were signs. But they are very good at hiding it, and often don't want anyone to know what they are going through. Top level sport is a strain at the best of times, it must be monumental if you are carrying something like mental illness with you

I couldn't remember if we'd had a thread for Olivia Podmore.

One big question is whether Cycling New Zealand and other codes have genuinely learnt much, or if these types of psychopathic "high performance" coaches of teenage girls are just lurking underneath a veneer of Safeguarding policies.

As she wheeled her way out of the pits of Rio's Barra Velodrome moments before her Olympic debut, Olivia Podmore's coach leaned in and delivered one last unsettling barb: "Don't crash, don't f***ing crash."

The coach had refused to roll the young sprint cyclist up to the startline for her opening race at the 2016 Olympic Games, instead offloading the responsibility to an assistant.

Earlier the coach had told the teenager she was "useless" and repeatedly declared that she didn't deserve to be there. It would be embarrassing for him to stand by her side on the startline, he said.

                                      And

For much of the previous two years, Cycling New Zealand's former campaign manager Jess Massey, had been trying to escalate concerns about cultural issues in the squad, and the "diabolical" conduct of one of the coaches in particular.

The coach, who cannot be identified due to suppression orders, routinely breached the organisation's alcohol policy and demonstrated "unethical" behaviour, Massey said.

She cited one example when Cycling New Zealand narrowly avoided an embarrassing diplomatic incident at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, after the coach stole a gold plated bell estimated to be worth thousands of pounds following the final event.

@Donsteppa not sure why the guy's name is suppressed. There's plenty of identifying information.

I had my suspicions and googled an ex CNZ cycling coach and resultant wiki page gave details which effectively confirmed it.

Googling the ex-wife brings up her wedding...

No idea who the athlete was in the inappropriate relationship though, and probably don't need to know.

Pretty shit system, I'm blaming the system for putting an arsehole in charge and keeping him there.

                                        Poor kid.

Yeah, no idea why his name is suppressed as everyone knows who it is.
