Julian Savea might be finding his mojo. He may be playing well.

But players don't suddenly "find" their old pace, like it slipped down the back of the sofa and he didn't look hard enough.

If he is to "find" some pace it will be in the off-season.

And I have a lovely bridge that you might like to buy, if you fall for that. Only one owner, a lovely Nigerian Prince.

Losing the weight might be a start, he’s looking trim. I agree with you, have an old memory of Savea or was it the Rok being sent to sevens to sharpen up and came back quicker.

Good God man. Do you actually think before you post?

Stones and glass houses right here.

    Guilty as charged

As am I, during any Chiefs game.

2 things I have noticed about the Sharks

one of the big things for me is their defence is strong. Players just seem to run into a brick wall when they hit the line - and often go back. Noticeable against the Blues, and often against the Canes as well. Good footy to watch.

    Jean-Luc du Preez is monstrous.

@bones Yes in 2015. They also beat the Chiefs and Crusaders in Chch that year.

Late to the thread but what a try saver by Ben May. No idea why he was so far back in play but great to see a Fatty put in the big ones.

What a fucken shamozzle by Li though. No brains to toe it ahead and no courage to make a play at it. It was moments like this that fucked it for the landers.

Yep - saw a big man moving fast and decided to let him have it. Although conversely he may have been buggered as he'd just sprinted a considerable distance back and then forward again

The Canes aren't helping Fifita's AB chances by playing him at lock, especially with a surging Akira. He is stuck in the tight and seems too lanky to play there with any authority.

I think his best role is a wider ranging 6 on attack, just like Squire, who basically parks himself out wide for the Highlanders.

Maybe. but Shields is playing so well at 6. He's a must start and 6 is his best position Well enough that Jones will be watching him closely. He looks in the best physical condition I have seen him in. maybe training extra hard with England in mind

Julian had a very good first half. faded in the 2nd until replaced but hopefully he's getting back to his best form. Ardie also looks to be playing at a higher level this year. He just looks a bit bulkier and is playing with more maturity

I though the Crusaders tight 5 would be too good (without our 4 top props and top hooker) against a tired Canes but the Canes were deserved winners.

I never saw the game but based on what I saw at ITM cup last year JGB is a journeyman at best so far. Didn't stand out at all and often inhibited our backline

You must have been watching different games to me (are you thinking of NPC 2016) because JGB was very good last year. He was outstanding in the Canterbury thrashing. The one game where his std slipped a bit was the final. But overall he was a massive improvement on 2016 (he was only ok during this yr) and had a very good 2017 NPC season

@antipodean I thought it was glaringly obvious and was surprised the ref didn't even flinch, nor the commentators mention it (it was Marshall I guess). Thought I'd missed something (like he was at halfback).

Maybe they know the law (which you obviously don't).

Obviously, hence I asked the question. Thanks for the enlightening reply. I was of the understanding you must remain 10m back from the lineout until it's over. So what have we missed?

If the ball is thrown long, players not in the lineout can move up as soon as the ball leaves the throwers hands. They don't have to wait till the ball crosses the 15m line.

I don't want to be rude, but that's pretty elementary rugby 101. Surely?

    It's leaning towards the technical

Riccitelli fell into the tackle, and it wasn't a shoulder charge. I don't think it was as malicious as you guys are making out - more unfortunate then anything. Under the new interpretation it should have been a yellow but contact with the head was accidental IMO.

Don't think anyone is suggesting it was a shoulder charge and i don't think RR falling into it has any relevance. He got hit in the head with force. I agree yellow would have been the "right" call but red isn't out of the question given what we have seen red cards for this year. Yet he got NOTHING, not even a penalty.
He should get a couple of weeks off with a discount for wearing a tie but i suspect they will totally ignore it.

@Higgins Yeah, true. Canes should lock Falcon in, esp if Otere Black leaves. Not sure whether any of the other Bay boys in the NZU20s are ready to make the step up. Unless new players make a good case for the last available SR spots, I can't think of more names. I rate Tangaere, maybe if he has a good season? Emerson? Geez, we've lost so many players ...

Can you guys stop talking riccitali up as an option for the abs? Looked like a shrimp out there against a real forward pack.

This is a point I was going to make. Riccitelli looked lightweight in this game, he was falling off tackles and didn't make much ground as a ball carrier. A good learning curve for him.

Which is what people said about Coles when he first came on. And Coles, for all his brilliance, is still no ball carrier against a pack like that. He needs space to use his pace.

I thought Ardie was the pick of the Canes forwards, the stupidity on Hall aside. He plays a different game to Todd and still appeals as the ideal impact sub for the ABs.

    Agree with that.

I thought the Hurricanes looked hesitant, as if they didn't know how to deal with continued pressure. Lots of balls were shovelled along the backline, and plenty were dropped cold. The forwards were awful in the tight.

Some of the tactics baffled me. Why have Julian Savea in your side and not use him on attack? Laumape showed that aggressive running at the line could pay off, but once the Crusaders worked out that all they had to do was mark him up they were sweet.

That said, they kept the score low. I'd be just a touch worried if I was a Crusaders fan about that. The lack of penetration against tight defences even when utterly dominant in most phases of the game has been their Achilles heel for a while now.

Absolutely. Jules had to inject himself in the game. he made a good run with only a few minutes to go but barely got the ball before that.
