My apologies for the biased slant of this report ,but I wrote it for the Northland Rugby Union website

    Northland Under 19 (24)Auckland Under 19 Development (20)

It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog could easily have been one of the catch cries that was written on the changing sheds at the Northland Events Centre when Northland under 19s created there own piece of history by beating an Auckland Under 19 Development team for the very first time in a seeding round prior to the National Under 19 tournament

When playing Auckland age group teams staying in the fight is always a key point no matter the pedigree or the size of the opposition, and on that level Northland took the fight to their more illustrious and sizeable opponents who were expected to be too strong after going down to the top Auckland Under 19 side by one point the previous week.

Auckland started the game strongly scoring 3 unconverted tries in the opening 20 minutes and looked like they were capable of scoring more tries whenever they had ball.
However Northland worked out if they held on to possession for long periods they would create some scoring opportunities, the indiscipline of the Auckland team who kept giving away penalties within kicking distance to which promising player and goal kicker Nikau Graham from Kerikeri gladly accepted stepping up and nailing 5 penalties to keep Northland in the hunt at halftime going in at 15 all.

Auckland once again started the 2nd half strongly scoring their 4th try,but once again the try was unconverted.
Northland who were lead by skipper Sadius Cook Savage at no 8 and with halfback Wil Grant and first five Royce Sanderson playing to a solid game plan into wind they eventually got themselves in to field position forcing Auckland to infringe within kicking range
Graham stepped up again nailing another 3 penalties in the second half to set up a frantic and pulsating last five minutes

Northland held on to take the victory over Auckland 24-20 and the joy at end when the referee blew the final whistle from players and coaching staff was palpable

The Northland forward pack deserved a ton credit for standing up to a very big Auckland pack at breakdown and at scrumtime where they held their own ,something that head coach Mark Kapa and his assistants Tui Raeli and former Northland prop Bronson Murray will be extremely proud of.

It’s always hard to single out one particular player , but Nikau Graham returning from injury in his first start in a seeding game for 2018 landing 8 penalties out of 9 attempts in breezy conditions would be a real contender for player of the day.

A very good win for the Northland Under 19s which will give them plenty of confidence going into the Jock Hobbs Memorial National Under 19 Tournament in Taupo next Sunday 9th September 2018.

@shark He played for BOP from 2013-2014. I think it was 2012 when he was in the NZ U20 side. I recall him saying when he signed for the Leicester Tigers that he signed for them because they were his favourite team to play with on Rugby 08 on PS2 haha.

@steven-harris Steve, Good articles on the B’s and the U19s game. Well done. And great to see Northland is building depth.

@muddyriver I have liked guys like Aorangi Stokes and Josh Larsen last two years. Size may be a factor but we will expect Jacobsen to be a lot better than those two given quick signing.

@gunner when we were coaching the prems we always thought that playing the Prem game first would help to solve a few issues. it would allow for a full bench and the hearty prem players could then back up to make the numbers in the reserves.
we even went a step further and thought that if the reserve game was 2nd then if a prem club was fortunate to have NPC players then they would play one in the reserves each week to boost morale and give the younger players some experience. the other thing it would do is allow the scrums to be safer in the reserves as the prem props could back up and secure the scrums.
the other option that no one has talked about is because of the lack of numbers in reserve grade that could be turned into a 10's comp, 5 4wds and 5 backs, unlimited subs.

@steven-harris said in Current squad for 2018:

I do hope Faiane is somewhere in the mix,the occasion I did see him him play for OBM against Kamo I was really impressed with his passing game both left and right.
Not totally sold on thoroughgood,I guess he’s benefited from being behind a very good Kamo pack and having Mac Sykes playing at 9,talking to many people,Skyes has been the standout club player.

Really hoping they are looking at the Englishman who plays tighthead for Kamo,Alex Gale,23 years old played for England at school boy level, the man is a rock at scrumtime..and for a big man,135kgs is very mobile...he played for Kamo last year, but weighed over 150kgs,has shed around 15kgs and from what I have been told will be coming out to play for Kamo again next year.

I went and watched the Semi final today, was a very tight game due to the conditions. The backs barely got a look in. Don't think I would be keen on either Faiane or Thoroughgood at 10 for Northland on todays performance. Maybe they would be better on a better surface?

@Steven-Harris the English prop might be solid at scrum time but he wouldn't physically cope at NPC level.

I read in the Advocate this morning that the squad is named this week (19th) and they have about 10 spots to fill which will come from club rugby unless a Super Rugby player becomes available. Have to think most of the leftover spots will come from that development squad they just named. Prop, lock, loosie, 10 and outside backs probably where we need a bit more depth.

Pleased to see that Mid Western stalwart and Chilean international, prop Sergio Felipe has made the Thames Valley Heartland team after moving down there to manage a dairy farm and playing for the local club team.
Great reward for a good man. When he takes the field he’ll make his NZ first class debut at the ripe old age of 32.

I'd say that is definitely Howard just a mistake. Great scrummager. Feet for hands but good defender

@gunner think he is cover for someone who is currently injured and will be touch and go if they make it back in time more so than any potnetial injuries.

thing is, someone like Savea should look a world beater at this level.

That turn of pace he showed, not sure I've seen him run like that for years, shows there is life in those legs still, but it might be a bit late?

@taniwharugby I wonder how many of us there are? Endless games of hope. Personally I don't think Northland rugby has ever been stronger. Can't wait got the day when we win the Premiership. Man would that be something...

@sammyc with all due respect, his brother is far from my favorite 9 we have on contract.

His passing leaves a lot to be desired...

Well 10 is a problem area for us so who knows, I have heard Dale is doing a lot of good work in the development space up here for Northland.

Im ok with Ram on the bench if they have DOuglas at 6, but Ram must play at some point, which obviously means Kara gets left out (as I'd have Matiu as the other loosie) but TBF he has been pretty quiet this year bar picking up a few too many penalties.

I think you put Tua at 13 as they did at the start and push Ranger to the wing, Wright has been disappointing, his hands have let him down unfortunately, although does look a shade quicker than I remember.

Hyland had been good up until the past few weeks, where teams have been putting the ball in behind him and he is struggling to get back and we have been exposed.

Assuming Macilai is fit, you have him, Ranger and Alaimalo at the back.
