We are doing it rather nicely, just a shame that it is not 2017. I was a bit late tuning in and am struggling to recall the guy playing fullback for us. Nisbo and Mex are saying something like Bacher but I am at a complete loss as to who he was. Can someone help me out please?

One thing that is noticeable is that the ball seems to come out of rucks and mauls rather quickly compared to nowadays, also scrums did not take an eternity to set, reset and reset yet again. In fact the overall pace and continuity of play seems to be higher than what we get now. The HB crowd also nice and vocal supporting our team and not afraid to signal their displeasure when poor or missed calls go against the good guys.

        15 Mr. Bacher
        14
        13 Jason Shoemark
        12 Sam Giddons
        11 Zac Guildford

        9 Danny Lee (Captain)
        8 Not Thomas the Tank
        7 Karl Lowe
        6 Michael Johnson
        5 Bryn Evans
        4 Matt Egan
        3 Toms Symes
        2 Hikawera Elliot
        1 Sona Taumalolo
        16
        17 Arden David
        18 Will Crutchley
        19 George Nauopu
        20
        21
        22

remainder to be confirmed as I identify, if possible, them.

Thanks for filling in the gaps but I still struggling to recall Ben Batger. Did he distinguish himself with us or any Australian team or was he another Luke Rooney?

It was sure a tonic to flagging spirits to see us putting in such a decent spirited display. Probably in the days of Tom Coventry and Peter Russell's stewardship or was it a year before they were in charge? Anyway I hope Mr. Bishop (he of "Craig Philpott can take us to the next level" fame) was watching. Both teams had a number of fine players in their lineups bringing back some nostalgic memories.
Final score for those that need reminding Hawkes Bay 35 - 25 North Harbour

2007 was Ben Batger's only year for Hawke's Bay.

The appointment, or non-appointment, of the Magpies coach is a Board decision only. It is in the HBRU Constitution. It is not an appointment made by the CEO.

One of the Board members (he is not on the Board now) who made the decision in 2011 to replace Peter Russell with Craig Philpott, told me a couple of years ago that another contender on the shortlist was Kevin Schuler, who shortly after, got the Bay of Plenty coaching job for 2012.

Regardless of who made the decision it was Mr. Bishop that made the famous "next level" statement. In hindsight I guess we can count ourselves a bit lucky dodging the Kevin Schuler bullet but the Board's eventual appointment has caused some of us a great deal of angst, with the negatives comfortably outweighing the positives, in my eyes anyway. I guess it is easier to remember the bad times than the good times just like you don't often remember the lucky calls you get but you sure as hell remember and resent the bad calls that come your way!

Saw him at McLean Park in 2015 - still looked fit as, hadn't put on any weight at all since he had last repped in 2010.

His selection in the Hurricanes in 2008 was well deserved from HB point of view. Shame he never made an appearance for the Hurricanes - played in the pre-season matches but not in any Super 14 match.

Here is an interesting statement attributed to Mike Bishop about the decision to axe Peter Russell in 2011
                          http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/provincial/5817989/Sacked-Hawkes-Bay-coach-lets-record-do-talking

Hawke's Bay chief executive Mike Bishop said the decision was based purely on a desire to freshen up the Magpies. Russell's assistant Tom Coventry is off to the Chiefs as an assistant so the union reached for the broom.
"It's been five years and it is time to move on," Bishop said.
"Peter is a great guy and a good coach but time was moving on, it was time to re-look."

2012 to 2017 = six seasons. Five seasons was long enough back in 2011 but six seasons is not in 2017 for some reason. Interesting..............

Just to jog the memory here is the NPC squad named for 2012
Hawkes Bay: Mitch Alcock, Jody Allen, Adrian Barone, Peter Borlase, Trent Boswell-Wakefield, Adam Bradey, Richard Buckman, Kieran Coll, Michael Coman, Israel Dagg, Ash Dixon, Chris Eaton, Brendon Edmonds, Hika Elliot, Tivaini Fomai, Zac Guildford, Andrew Horrell, Gillies Kaka, Marvin Karawana, Ross Kennedy, Karl Lowe, Nick McLennan, Tino Nemani, Isaac Paewai, Tom Parsons, Maselino Paulino, Tua Saseve, Johan Schoonbee, Ben Tameifuna, Star Timu, Dan Waenga and Ihaia West
Five other players – Jesse-Lee MacDonald, Matt Gordon, Bronson Neera, Michael Ruru and Peniasi Tokakece – have been included in the Magpies wider training squad.

Magpies injury list (updated 7 October 2017)

Poor Geoff Cridge must be one of the unluckiest players in NZ Super Rugby. He'll miss another Hurricanes season if the HBT got this right (I hope not)! Bloody hell.

@stargazer well, there is a bit of gossip I heard a couple of months ago.

The gossip is that HB missed out on signing Tom Coventry last year by three days.

June 2016 - announced that Tom Coventry is leaving London Irish

Sept 2016 - Blues announce the signing of North Harbour coach Steve Jackson as assistant coach, meaning North Harbour need a new coach for 2017

November 11, 2016 - North Harbour announce they have signed Tom Coventry

In 2015 Philpott and Lee signed contract extensions taking them through to end of 2017. Of course there are performance reviews at the end of each season which is why contracts can be terminated early.

If the gossip is true that HB missed out on signing Coventry by three days in November, then it could fit that Philpotts' and Lee's end of 2016 season reviews were probably happening then and HB attempted to sign Coventry, but just missed out.

Of course, the gossip might also be bullshit.

We may not have an All Black at the moment, we still have Bay players playing international tests.

Tony Lamborn is in the starting line-up of the USA squad to play Germany - despite being suspended in NZ (I guess he'll serve it in club rugby in 2018, just like Manawatu's Newton Tudreu).
Dan Snee has been named at 12 for Spain and will take on Canada this weekend.
