@Stargazer To be fair to Curtis, he looks to have matured a little as a player from when he was an utter douche playing for Wellington. Still not exactly a player to be worried about if you're in the opposition though.

Māori television will broadcast the three Māori All Blacks games, so free to air (delayed, not live) in NZ.

            • denotes new Maori All Blacks cap

With a number of All Blacks being made available this week, Head Coach Colin Cooper (Ngati Pukenga/Ngati Porou) has named four All Blacks in his run-on side for Friday night. All four All Blacks - Elliot Dixon, Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Rieko Ioane, and Damian McKenzie – played for the Maori All Blacks last year.

Their re-entry into the Maori All Blacks also means a family reunion for brothers Akira and Rieko Ioane, and Marty and Damian McKenzie.

“These guys are all familiar with our environment so we know that they are able to move between the All Blacks and our squad with great ease. The Maori All Blacks is another home for those guys.

“This is the most experienced squad we’ve had for a while, and many of the players who played for us last year have stepped up a level from there. It means that we have a really experienced playing 23, with only three new caps, starting with Kara Pryor who had a very good season with the Blues and then carried that into the Mitre 10 Cup. He was close to being named in the squad last year but was injured so it’s good to be able to give him a start.

“The other two, Marcel Renata and Leighton Price, will come off the bench this Friday; they played well in Mitre 10 Cup and it’s good to be able to give them a chance to earn a cap for this team.

“Ash Dixon takes on the captaincy duties this year but really he’s been part of the set up for a while. He has experience as a leader on the field, and with former captain Tim Bateman back in the mix, I know that the team will have some really solid decision makers on the field,” he said.

The preparation time in Chicago has been good and they were clear about their game plan.

“The main focus will be on playing our game and making sure we give the USA due respect. We’ve have had a look at them and they have a big raw game, a big pack and we will need to play with some structure. We will want to have a good focus on attack and defend with a lot of go forward.”

Strong squad when you add TKB, Elliot Dixon, Reiko Ioane and McKenzie in!

Bit tough on USA when they don't even have their European stars!

@Frye agree very strong squad, reckon with our line out options looking thin, Dixon might have been an option for the ABs given he was the most used kiwi forward in super rugby

DMac at 15 shows to me that the AB coaches don't see him as a potential AB 10 (other than in case of emergency); otherwise they would have given him a run in the 10 jersey for the Maori team and not a start at 15. They may move him to 10 when/if West is subbed off and MMac comes on.

Also no Codie Taylor (or Dane Coles) in the Maori line-up as they suggested at the team naming. Most of us assumed that would be Taylor on the bench, and that would have resulted in Coltman making his AB debut against Ireland. Either Coles and Taylor will both play for the ABs, or one of them will get a rest (unless there is an injury we don't know about).

If there was still any doubt, this line-up also clearly shows that TKB has been overtaken by TJP.

                    I assume Bateman is vc?

Not sure I agree with your conclusions in some of that. The AB coaches will be looking to make sure DMac gets game time no matter what position. This is Coopers team and he will call the shots not the ABs. Cooper will need to give MMac time at 10 as well.

TKB is always a horses for courses pick for the ABs and (I think) is still a likely against France.

I don't think they would see him as a serious option at 10, at present. His time at 10 at even Super level would measure minutes - if he's played there at all? He played a couple of Mitre10 Cup games there, but I don't think he set the world on fire. Surely they wouldn't really look at him as a potential 10 until he'd at least played some significant time there at Super level.

I'd say he's very much a work in progress for the ABs, but definitely a 15 at present, who may have potential to develop into a 10. Taking a sort of Beauden Barrett path.

My personal view is that he'll need to take this 10 path, because he's not going to be tall enough to consistently play fullback (compete in the air) against the big boys. A couple of years down the track he might be competing with the 6ft 5" Jordi Barrett (same height as Folau?).
