@Bovidae How stupid is it that Hastings and MAGs don't have a match? You'd think they could have a traditional match for each of them - Hastings v Napier or another Super 8 team, instead Hamilton Boys get two games!

Don't know why I'm whinging, I'm not even in NZ to watch it - must still be annoyed from The Walking Dead finale.

@Nepia It's not just no Hastings BHS. There's not any Hawke's Bay school in that list at all. Absolute shambles! Not even the Palmerston North BHS v Napier BHS game for the Polson Banner.

But 2 games from Hamilton BHS, Auckland Grammar, Christchurch BHS, St Kentigern and Christ's are televised. Shithouse.

I'm sure Sky decides where they want to broadcast games from, as there is a bit of planning involved with scaffolding for cameras, OBU etc. Coming to Hamilton and Tauranga from Auckland isn't that much hassle.

I was surprised when I saw the list but Hastings could still feature live on TV in the Super 8 final.

Good to see a few more South Island games this year, coverage in other years has been dominated by North Island games.

Apparently, it wasn't a hassle in previous years, when the games were spread all over the country. I also don't see how it's less of a hassle to broadcast a game in Southland than in Taranaki, Wellington, Nelson or Hawke's Bay.

@Stargazer Budget restrictions and the Lions tour are given as reasons in the NZH article. The total number of games has been reduced from 49 to 30.

Yeah, I noticed. I actually hope that regional sports organisations like Sport Hawke's Bay, College Sport Wellington etc will become more active in promoting local schools and club games by organising livestreams online or radio (with commentary). It's not that hard and shouldn't be that expensive? Radio Eketahuna broadcasts all Wai-Bush games and important local club games. There's also a radio station in Wellington (I can't remember the name) that broadcasts a lot of games. That should become normal practice for games that are not on tv. I can live without a tv broadcast if there is an alternative to follow a game live via another medium.

@Stargazer I was at this game. HBHS dominated from go to whoah. They just had too much firepower for MAGS. The obvious strength for the team is the 9, 10, 12 combo but there are just so many other 'guns' across the park for HBHS. It was hard to single anyone out as it was very much a complete team performance but besides 9, 10,& 12 the no.8 Flanders is a real athlete and Symes was a rock up front...a real leader. The stocky right winger was a handful too every time he ran the ball and tough as nails! They scored some great tries from set piece, broken play and off of MAGS errors. As good as the Hastings were with the ball it was perhaps their defence which was most impressive. They gave MAGS nothing! Great line speed and communication on defence and solid contact with the big MAGS ball carriers. Gee they will be hard to beat this year. They play ST Kentigerns on Thursday I believe. That should be a good one!

Yep, that team was years in the making. I remember a few years ago where they had a young team, mostly 5th formers, and they competed well. Everyone knew they would be a force when they were 7th form, and they proved it right last year.

Thanks for that info @Nogusta! Good to hear from someone who watched the game. The official line-up had Kini Naholo, younger brother of Waisake, at 14. I've seen him play sevens and he was a monster (in a good sense, obviously). Good to hear he's the same when playing XVs.

It's such a pity that the Sky 1st XV broadcast schedule doesn't include one single game of Hastings BHS. We'll have to wait until the Super 8 and National finals until we get to see them play (assuming nothing goes wrong in the mean time)! Not any of their Super 8 games is within driving distance either.

@Stargazer certainly a strange 'decision' not to have any HBHS games on Sky this year. They'd be a pretty safe bet though to be appearing in one (or more...) of the televised finals. It definitely wasn't Naholo I was talking about...short stocky kid...reminded me a bit of Mason Emerson. Copped a couple of high shots but just kept running hard and fast!
I think Naholo was on the bench, or may have been replaced? The centre Robinson also had a strong game....like I said earlier it was hard to fault any of the Hastings players....I forgot Jeriah Mua as well who at times looked like Julian Savea!
