Not a lot in the game although HBHS clearly looked like the better team today. Understandable given the experience of their ‘big 4’ (McLutchie/Fakatava/Toala/Kereru-Symes) and the fact they’ve been on the road for a couple of weeks now and this being SKCs first hit out of the preseason. HBHS are very well organized team. After watching their game against MAGS and again today they really look to have found that balance in their game to be able to play with great structure as well as having a great nous for knowing when an ‘off the cuff’ opportunity might be on and taking it! They've got the personnel to play any type of game and opposition – tight or wide, structured or what’s in front of them. St Kents were a match for most parts of the game but just gave away too much possession. As they did against MAGS – the HBHS defence harassed and bustled St Kents on D, not allowing any good ball. SKC star player Etene Nanai (playing at centre) as a result was starved of any good early ball in space. The one opportunity he did get he danced around his marker and ran his fullback in for their only try – highlighting how dangerous he was and what a good job Hastings did of denying him and other threats in the SKC backline any quality ball.
SKC had a quite a few what you would consider starters either on the bench or not playing due to injury. There was a very noticeable difference in their play when 1st five eighth Rivez Reihana came on for the last 20 mins and in fact SKC probably had the better of HBHS during this period. Would love to see these 2 match up again when both are at full strength.

Speaking of Etene Nanai, he will be a Chief as of next year. Most thought he was lost to Union having signed for the Warriors as a 5th Former that but contract only covered him for his schoolboy years and the Chiefs have since won the race for what must be most sought after signature in schoolboy rugby.

@Wurzel That's great news (signed for Blues would be even better). I guess that will mean he is eligible for the NZ Schoolboys this year then.

@Bovidae From what i've seen of him, fullback. His running talent is unbelievable but he's also got a heck of a punt.

He's played exclusively at fullback for the past two season but could be moved into centre so he gets more time with the ball.

He's the most devastating runner I've seen. Makes Damien Mackenzie look like Richard Loe.

@Bovidae Agree, but this is not last year's team. I understand it's a much younger, inexperienced squad.

@Stargazer It never is the same team that won the nationals the year before but the NZ teams have generally done well. Rotorua BHS didn't win either as their team had a number of year 14 players.
