The one thing we do not need on Auckland's waterfront is a stadium. They are effectively a 13 story blank wall. There's a reason they are always pictured lit up at night. It's because during the day even the best of them look industrial and uninspiring. I'd rather have the container terminal - at least there's something to watch

The promoted one is sunk into the harbour, but with a floating roof - to improve the aesthetics. Quite an engineering feat really, to allow for good drainage of the turf without seawater blow-back. Big helicopter needed to drop it into place too I imagine.

I'd like a stadium at the port, and a port at Eden Park - with a canal dug to it.
And I want no pumps at the new sunken stadium, and no dredging of my new canal, because I wish it therefore it is so. (I intend contracting my team of unicorns for these 2 pieces of never-ending extra work, at a lucrative rate).

@dogmeat North Shore / Pakuranga but anywhere where a car is required. Parking is a big hassle and if coming from those areas on public transport, well forget about it.

No way. Eden Park is a piece of piss to get to from the shore. Plenty of free buses or via the trains in town.
We occasionally drive too but mainly for blues games when the crowd is smaller. No problems parking within a 10min walk.

@ARHS - Plenty in the past 20 years. Always a big walk from some side street at least 2km from the ground unless you get there hours early in one of those school parking lots. The longest walk was 5km away to St Lukes where the charter buses were parked. Hence why I switched to taking the train but it was easier as I was near a rail station at those times.
Not sure if you realise this but most of downtown Auckland is reclaimed from the sea. They’ve been doing it since the 19th century. Reclaiming more land for a stadium isn’t a big deal in my humble opinion.

You just need to know where to park with all the closed roads for any event at Eden Park. Usually it is a 10 min walk from where I park. Mt Smart is worse for parking despite being in an industrial area.

Same, I get the same park for AB or Super games and it's an easy walk, did it when my kids were little and they either walked or were on my shoulders. Didn't kill me, so must have been easy enough.

hah just a little eh! It would barely be 5km from Eden Park to the potential site of the new waterfront stadium

Well it felt like 5km with the side streets we were walking through. Went through the Eden rugby club way. It wasn’t a 10min walk. It was more like a 20min walk. All the charter buses were parked there.Catching the train was much easier. 2min walk.

@ARHS - most of downtown Auckland is reclaimed from the sea. Not sure what the problem is. According to you Britomart station (ie: that underground station right next to the harbour) should’ve been flooded by now. Well, it hasn’t flooded. Not even with the recent floods.

@JK - fair enough. When I lived in the Shore years ago, the buses were terrible. I’m told they still are recently with all the public transport disruptions this year.

Yes I think they still are. I don't catch them for daily commutes but the ferries are very unreliable.
For a game though its quite different with buses direct to Eden Park from most bus stations as well as other handy locations like Takapuna central. Its very easy and no charge as all included within your ticket (not that they even check).

Read what I wrote. You promoted the steps down to the harbour water. Maybe I read it wrong in thinking it was being built immediately adjacent to the water. But I understood it was to be a floating roof for the promoted design.
Because of the roof thing i asked about the plan for watering the turf at that level and whether the roof would block all rain.
There will be lots of water pumped out for people and services.
If you published the engineering plan that might help the cause. -

And the most famous harbourside architectural landmark of the 20th century went massively over budget and they sacked the architect.
If it was my money I'd be very sceptical of a stadium set into the water, especially in terms of costs, construction quality, and getting it built on time. Surely there is an easier way and a location that is more accessible than an overcrowded pimple on the edge of an isthmus.

yeah I think my family have been supporters there for getting up to close to a century and you forgot arguably the biggest advantage: the AB Eden Park record!

Oh and I've walked top of Queen St (where I used to live) to Eden Park and it was a great little walk.
To the poster who said North Shore was too far with public transport, that has definitely improved in the last few years but yeah it still depends on exactly where one lives on the Shore.
