Stunning arrogance. The most powerful rugby clubs in the world must be part hysterically amused, part affronted that New Zealand Rugby believes it can appoint itself as some kind of regulatory force in the global transfer market.
The arrogance of this sits on multiple levels. The first and most galling part is the notion of NZR determining which clubs meet their approval. Surely diversity is to be celebrated in rugby and is the sport's major strength? NZR, though, appear to feel some need to homogenise the game, have everyone adopt a 'Kiwi' approach to training, skill development, workloads and culture.
The bit that is hardest to stomach is this subliminal message that New Zealand doesn't have anything to learn from any other nation.

The more affronted they are the happier I will be.
Those "pass the chequebook" clubs are wrecking Southern Hemisphere rugby for their own self-aggrandizement, so they can go fuck themselves!

I usually like Gregor Paul's articles and even the videos he does with Pat McKendry... But that article... I keep getting angrier the more I think about it. I just don't get it at all.

Disappointed that the NZRU have chosen to go with a Premiership club in a club-run competition.
It’s been my view that alliances and collaboration should be happening between union run clubs and competitions. This is the NZRU supping with the devil. Hope they’ve brought a long spoon.

But that idea of the English and French clubs being the Devil really only relates to their relationships with their own unions. For the NZRFU I don’t see that they would see any differential between the clubs and say the provinces.

I wonder whether they'll try negotiating a deal with a French club as well. The last few years, AB coaches have attended and assisted at training sessions from ASM Clermont; not sure whether there are connections with other French clubs.
Or maybe a Welsh or Irish PRO14 club?
Simon Manix and Carl Hayman are coaching at Pau. I would love the shit out of that arrangement.

So question with this deal in place with the Harlequins. Would it be safe to assume that the Harlequins are the only team NZR could strike a deal with in the English Premiership? Therefore that would be a key benefit for the Harlequins - they can't sign NZ based players long term (e.g. greater than 2 years) - but they are the preferred choice (in that particular competition) if NZ based players want to get some cash.
NZR would strike similar deals with teams in other competitions - especially the French one.....
