@booboo its really impressive but given it started behind the range of hills at the far left why didn't they simply build a bridge down the valley highlighted which would have been a shorter route to the same end point?

Not being a road engineer, I'm not saying that's the best solution, but judging from the below pic it looks like they're attempting to address a gradient of approx 20°
