When I saw that I thought you'd be stoked. It's cool to see them cutting loose a bit. Did you ever see that video of those American soldiers remaking that lady Gaga video? I think they got in trouble because they were all in Iraq etc at the time, it was pretty cool though

Wasn't Slater convicted of something a few years ago? How is he eligible for diversion? (I'm not 100% how diversion works but assumed it was for first offences but seems there's a good chance I'm completely wrong).

yeah pretty sure Diversion is for those without any prior convictions, although if you re-offend, they may look at it when considering sentencing (in terms of pattern, behavior, character)

generally, it is the offender's first offence

the offence is not serious

the offender has accepted full responsibility for the offences as described in the summary of facts

In this instance, I suspect sending him off to diversion with Alanis ringing in his ears and a fair chunk of the country taking delight in his misfortune is probably punishment enough.

You can in theory get diversion more than once. It's not that common but I think Jimmy Cowan got diversion twice within a fairly short space of time a while back?

John Niven is a very funny Scottish novelist. He likes to drink. He didn't find his last visit to Sydney very amusing.

I find that stuff fascinating.

Interesting extension of the last bit about Milkdromedans "knowing" that the Universe is static and steady yet we "know" it is the result of The Big Bang is that our understanding is based on our observable universe... Who knows what is going on outside that?

Have just finished reading a book called 'Unsolved Mysteries of Science' http://www.amazon.com/Unsolved-Mysteries-Science-Mind-Expanding-Perplexing/dp/0471384410

Admiitedly it was a 2001 book and I am sure 'we' have clarified some of the missing info in the last 15 years ... but the one thing it proved to me is the one we can be certain of is that there will always be something more to learn.

Steady state to Big Bang to Newtonian physics to Relativity to Quantum physics to string theory to dark energy and dark matter ... they're all part of the picture, all interrelated, all correct and all incorrect (or at least incomplete or have holes you could drive a galactic cluster through) all at the same time.
