There is an unwritten Law of the Jungle known as "The Code." If you think along the lines of the Queensbury Rules, you'll be close. Fighting usually means mano-a-mano, dropped gloves, and punching the face. That's A-OK as far as the hockey fraternity is concerned, and thereby not heavily policed. But if you have a third-man-in, or stick swinging, or kicking, or sucker-punching from behind, or jumping on top of a player once downed and pummeling his head into the ice -- you'll get heavy fines and game suspensions.

"The Code" is mostly adhered to by the goons. Each team usually dresses a "goon" -- an enforcer -- to make sure other teams don't start the dirty play, or to exact revenge for deeds gone unpunished. Next to goalies, they probably have the most stressful jobs in hockey. If you have a good one, they are worth their weight in gold.

If you want to see the gentlemanly "brotherhood" between these goons, consider this absurd video below. The NHL implemented a new penalty at the beginning of the season that fighters could not remove their own helmets. So these two goons -- in a re-match -- found a loophole : they removed each others' helmet before commencing the slug-fest. You can hear the laughter from the spectators. Hilarious!

One more question RT - when they get sent off, does the team play with one less for the entirety of the game. i.e. is there a drastic disadvantage for your team having someone sent for an early shower?

They will be down a player. But some of the 25 players dressed -- such as back-up goalie and 4th-liners who are employed for "truculence" and typically thrown onto the ice only to ignite something -- rarely get ice time, it's not a huge disadvantage. Coaches will cover by shuffling or giving extra shifts to the first three lines. Most teams go with four lines, but you could conceivably play an entire game with three forward lines (9 players), two defence pairs (4 players) and one goalie, so that (again, conceivably) leaves 11 remaining "character" or "role" players to sit and wait for the coach to throw on the ice. They'll include the backup goalie, some penalty kill specialist, defenders, one-or-two goons, and the rest "grinders." Quite often stars from the 2nd-or-3rd lines will be in the starting line-up, but their coaches will bench them and restrict their ice-time for making dumb mistakes and send them a message that their careers are in jeopardy, so teams are used to players who are dressed never seeing action.

Adding: The seamless transitions where teams to change lines throughout the game (unlimited substitution) without a stoppage while still in action is poetry-in-motion. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't think of any other team sport that permits such a law, where players can inter-change (join-and-leave) the playing area while the play is still active. (What's the rule in Rugby League? Does interchange have to be done after a whistle and before a re-start, or can they interchange in the middle of a set while the ball is still in play?)

Maybe should start a V8s thread on the Sports page but this from the weekend was classic.

For those that don't follow, the V8 Supercar series has recently been expanding from just Ford v Holden to Nissan and Mercedes (2013) and Volvo (2014). This was the post race interview of Race 2 of the season where young Kiwi driver Scott McLauglin managed second place in his Volvo by overtaking the top Holden driver on the last corner. His classic 'plucked it into first and gave it some jandal.... f*ck yeah!' line has gifted the team a marketing slogan and a lot of fans...
