I also have concerns over whether Sparks servers will handle the load especially during the big games. I'm sure they've done capacity planning/testing but it's not always easy to predict how the systems will perform on the day, and obviously any issue at all that causes a delay in the stream will be a massive deal. There will be some pretty nervous Spark technicians and execs on the day... πŸ™‚

I would assume they aren't using their own servers?

The live pictures and commentary will come down from Japan by fibre and satellite to TVNZ in Auckland (TVNZ is handling all the production for Spark), then up to the West Coast of the USA to be turned into a 'stream' before being sent back to New Zealand.

Surely that step to the USA is about renting capacity from an Amazon or a Google server farm? Then they can increase capacity pretty quickly to match the demand

I was wondering why the US step, that would explain it. In the context of the big cloud providers, serving a stream to NZ (even if everyone in the country is watching) would be small fry.

I wonder if spark have plans to invest in local server capacity if spark sport goes well.

@Duluth they said in that article they are planning for up to 500,000 streams.

Will be interesting to see if they fail though, streaming into NZ could be challenging.

Shouldn't be a problem. Stream running from Japan straight into Sydney (AJC) and then there's two cables from Sydney to New Zealand for Spark - one into Raglan (TGA) and another into Whenuapai (SCCM).

A lot of the rural areas don't have UFB, or even reliable fibre, so streaming won't be an option.

I've bought the RWC package but I am not confident it will work well. They still don't have an Apple TV app.

Our internet isn't great and we don't even have a sealed road FFS (50+ houses). I chose to have some land and live in the sticks, but parts of NZ are seriously behind the times. I need a horse.

@JC Yeah I had seen that thanks. I have enough morons in my life and a horse would be a step up in intelligence, and ease of transport given the roads around here - which was the point - along with internet speeds and rural NZ being neglected.

That makes sense. So most likely they'll be dealing with a multitude of complaints from hillbillies like @Snowy that are outside of their control; I don't envy their Help Desk!

Don't get me wrong though, I do like the idea and streaming is definitely the future of TV. It's just a pretty risky endeavor, I would have waited to the next WC when fibre is more widespread.

As a side note, for the cricket world cup, Sky is the broadcaster over here. However, they've announced that if England make the final, it will be free on terrestrial TV.

That is shithouse from a revenue point of view, but absolutely outstanding from pretty much so all others.

As a side note, for the cricket world cup, Sky is the broadcaster over here. However, they've announced that if England make the final, it will be free on terrestrial TV.

That is shithouse from a revenue point of view, but absolutely outstanding from pretty much so all others.

On that note, I think the coverage has been bloody excellent - the graphics especially.

Good for Santner. Timed that brilliantly - as good a shot as I've seen from him
