Gotta give it to him for sticking about with the lack of game time over what is it, 4 seasons now.

I expect he has attracted some decent enough offers playing in Europe or Japan.

@Tim fucken hell, that's bad. What on earth will the Blues do without Gibson? They'll be lost.

Adrian Choat better be ready to play plenty of minutes with the two most injury prone 7s in world rugby being in our squad.

From the Al Blacks.com website -
Blues lock Scott Scrafton looked to be making significant progress in his career in the early stages of the 2018 Investec Super Rugby season, but then a debilitating knee injury knocked him out of the game for 12 months.
He's on the cusp of getting back onto the park again, and that can't come quick enough, but as a result of work put in during his absence there is an anticipation he will be even better equipped to handle the demands of both the position and the competition.

Two-metres tall with 15 Blues appearances, Scrafton, 25, demonstrated his worth in the brief time he had before his injury, a significant part of that being a share of the Blues 2017 win over the British & Irish Lions.

"Growing up as a kid in New Zealand and watching them play, and then getting to play against them, and beat them, you can't really describe it to be honest. Having been brought up knowing my rugby history and knowing what the history of the Lions team is, and what sort of calibre of player they have and to beat them on Eden Park in front of a sellout crowd, was a pretty amazing," he said.

But such early exposure to the demands of playing an international side had made a big impression on him. They were hard, liked to take opponents on and beat them up but that was fun as a lock, he said.

"It was a huge experience, obviously a pressure moment for myself in my first proper year playing at that level and there was a bit of responsibility with calling the lineouts and all that sort of stuff. Now I'm feeling confident and it's given me the confidence to try and take my game to another level," he said.

Scrafton's enjoying being back running and putting into action the modifications that have been applied as a result of the injury he suffered in round three of last season in Johannesburg. He hyper-extended his knee but in the process did his ACL and LCL and also ripping the tendon off the bone which give him nine to 12 months to return to play. His aim is to complete it in 10 months.

"I was really enjoying my rugby but then we didn't have a great year, for myself and the team and it was really frustrating. There were probably six weeks when I was in bed because of my knee and I couldn't be around the boys so it was a really frustrating time in my life," he said.

Three and a half hours of surgery were involved in repairing him and then his right leg was in a straight leg brace for six weeks. That meant he couldn't drive and was restricted to getting taxis. But he had high praise for the Blues medical staff and the New Zealand Rugby Union who proved very supportive.

While movement as soon as possible was ideal, he spent six months learning how to run again but now his concentration is on his rugby conditioning.

He had a month of specific work on his running, and specifically modifying the weight he ran on, concentrating on knee and hip actions during the running process.

That had come about when he returned from South Africa and discussed how he would cope with his time out of the game and what would he be like when he got back to playing again.

"It was about whether I was going to be better or if I was going to come back and try and play and get better? So the whole mindset from the start was to return as a better athlete and a better player. They've been pushing that the whole way and I feel a couple of weeks out that I am getting there and it is just getting that rugby conditioning under my belt," he said.

Realising as a lock that he needed to be bigger he has put on four kilos which was good weight, and he was carrying it now. That had been a problem growing up when he needed to be bigger but he was getting to a size he liked and he felt fitter, faster and stronger, and was starting to put that into his play.

What compounded the frustration of his recovery was the great year his Auckland teammates enjoyed in the Mitre10 Cup but he stuck with the Blues medical team in his build-up work and he was feeling the benefits of that now.

From his own observation he found the hard-nosed edge to the Auckland pack made a difference. Forwards coach Filo Tiatia was tough and that bore fruit with the way players were able to step in when injuries occurred and maintain the momentum. The change in culture had also been helpful.

Now it was a case of the Blues building on that with Scrafton wanting to make his own contribution.

I'm gonna say we'll win 8 games and we'll finish 8th or 9th. Most likely 9th because we're the Blues.

But if we win the opening game, we're gonna win the whole thing!

It comes down to derby games mainly. If you don't win enough of them you will drop way down irrespective of how you perform against non-NZ sides. Reverse the two Blues/Highlanders results and the picture is very different.

@Dolamite Who will? Highlanders were second to last, but still had double the Blues points - that's a big improvement!

It comes down to derby games mainly. If you don't win enough of them you will drop way down irrespective of how you perform against non-NZ sides. Reverse the two Blues/Highlanders results and the picture is very different.

Yes, absolutely. That's our challenge for the year - finish above the Highlanders as a non-negotiable, and then look to get in front of the other three is possible.
