I went to bed quite early and had two or three dreams that I checked the score and we were only 4 down and I was getting happier and happier and then I woke up and was gutted to realise it was a dream.

Checked my phone and saw we were only 4 down! Could not believe it.

Felt like a Soothsayer for a moment!

(On a weird coincidence the other night I dreamt they were going to abandon a highway upgrade and then yesterday they cancelled the upgrade from Cambridge heading south)

Wow - that's even wilder than the dream I had about mowing my lawn, where I mowed my lawn.

That one's coming true as well! 🙂

We'd have to lose 6 for 30 to be under real threat I reckon.

Someone had to say it didn't they?

        Better than 9 for 40..

And even if we do now I reckon we're safe.

Currently 199 to win at 2.2 rpo.

Get Hank to his ton, add a few more and we'll be looing at defending 240-250 at 3s.

It all depends on how willing they are to risk losing to win. In these days of T20, if Pakistan retain wickets then they can just unleash with 15 overs to go and it could be tough to stop them making a hundred runs in that period.

If we're playing to win, I reckon bat for an hour tomorrow - the second half in T20 mode - if we can (Get the pads on Colin!).

That should get us close to 270 and leave five hours to have a crack at bowling them out.

            @nzzp Whoa, whoa, whoa.

That's the sort of dream only movie stars can have. I'm on a budget subscription - my dreams involve lawn mowers and are low resolution and black and white!

Kane is an absolute legend, and I hope Nicholls gets his ton, he deserves it.

Elephant in the room: Taylor made 22. And Raval, Latham, and Somerville together made 14.

Elephant in the Room??? That's the zoo, silly! This is NZ cricket we are talking about. We rely on one or two to do awesome and the others a bit rubbish

@mokey Yeah- Henry absolutely deserves a hundred.

A point that I've missed until looking just now is that Henry has actually been pretty bloody good for the past two years. He's averaging 49 across 12 tests and, even if he gets out first ball tonight, he'll average 46 in that period.

I'm wondering if Yasser Shah was turning the ball too much last night. Some of his stuff was going across the batsman from about two feet outside leg stump. Looked unplayable, but wasn't.

                    KW test average over 52.....

....and Nicholls is a shade under 38 too. Good on you blokes. Would be nice if Taylor had turned up though.

It's funny to me that Ross Taylor's record is in complete contrast to how often i have felt he's let us down.

Kane is just ridiculously good, a pleasure to watch him work last night. Huge pressure on him, and he played beautifully.

Bat for an hour this morning, try and get another 50-60, and then make them fucking work for it.

Oh, credit to Nicholls too, who looked uncomfortable throughout, but is still there. His reverse sweeps to break up the spinners were pretty good to watch.

@mariner4life Nicholls never looks completely comfortable to me, some definite work-ons in regards to technique. But from early on when he scored some good runs against the big boys it was clear he has mentel toughness in spades. Well worth his spot at the moment, lots of upside to his game.

@mariner4life When Taylor is in the zone, he is magic to watch and makes it look effortless. But then he has these cold patches where it seems he couldn't hit a basketball. Just hope he snaps out of it before the home series.

@mariner4life Taylor really annoyed me this series. Once we had a sniff of actually winning a series in UAE (which thanks to others we still do) at 1 nil his approach to batting has been fucking poor. Done over in 2 first innings in 3 balls to balls on the stumps and yesterday he'd started so well, too well maybe with a strike rate of 200 to get to 20, well he had to use that start. Nobody has scored quickly in UAE and in an innings where we desperately needed the senior batsman he was fucking soft.

A win in UAE is fucken precious in world cricket and he didn't really show up. 82 in a lost game doesn't carry much weight IMO

Nicholls has been great. Weird that there are international cricketers who you'd rather see reverse sweep than try playing a cover drive

I like that Taylor was looking to be aggressive and hit his way into form. At least he has the ability for that to come off (some of the time at least). Showed that he was looking for other options rather than sitting back defensively which didn't work in earlier innings.

KW, far out. I stayed up till nearly 2am to enjoy that masterclass. Well supported by Nicholls but I totally agree that he looks like he could get out at any moment, whether he's on zero or 99!! Definitely better when he's in a solid partnership and not having to create too much himself.

Aside from keeping an eye on the performance of our openers, and batting options at 6/7 to support BJ, I think our approach should be 'lets bat with Kane'. I know we want everyone to be contributing to partnerships across the board, but if we can get 2-3 guys a match sticking with Kane then we are cooking with gas.

Also really stoked with how Somerville has gone. Great to see him in the wickets and really interested in what he might offer on NZ pitches.

Two decent looking new spinners in a row for the BCs.....are we living in the twilight zone?

Aside from keeping an eye on the performance of our openers, and batting options at 6/7 to support BJ, I think our approach should be 'lets bat with Kane'. I know we want everyone to be contributing to partnerships across the board, but if we can get 2-3 guys a match sticking with Kane then we are cooking with gas.

Also really stoked with how Somerville has gone. Great to see him in the wickets and really interested in what he might offer on NZ pitches.

Two decent looking new spinners in a row for the BCs.....are we living in the twilight zone?

@mn5 I know!! Weird to suddenly realise we have a bit of depth, even if only in 1-2 positions!!

No matter how dramatic (or predictable) the Kiwi batting collapse is, you're still genuinely surprised when Kane gets out. Everyone looked stunned when he got out in the 1st innings which is why he settled in for bed and breakfast in the 2nd. I probably care more about cricket stats than he does, but a not out and an average of 52 would be nice at the end of this series - and gives him a little gap ahead of Root. And as it says in that article above, in 4 of the last 5 calendar years he has averaged over 60.
