Southee was dropped. They were only going to play 2 pace bowlers and Boult and Wagner have been preferred. There is a suggestion that NZ will rotate their quicks during this series.

New boy Patel has ridiculously good FC stats.......for a NZ spin bowler.

      That is encouraging.

        For the cricket tragics...

NZ win the toss and they'll bat first.

1 Jeet Raval, 2 Tom Latham, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Ross Taylor, 5 BJ Watling (wk), 6 Henry Nicholls, 7 Colin de Grandhomme, 8 Neil Wagner, 9 Ajaz Patel (debut), 10 Trent Boult, 11 Ish Sodhi

        Weak tail. Wagner at 8?

Now that I've started the season on a negative let's get positive. That top 7 is possibly our best ever overall.

Ish and Wagner can both bat respectably well for bowlers (without being all-rounders). Boult probably offers about as much with the bat as Southee these days. Surprised that he's listed ahead of Sodhi. I'd probably have Sodhi 8 Wagner 9 and Boult 11 with the proviso that I know nothing about Patel's batting ability.

I log back on early on a Saturdee morning before a day of piling my house ( anyone welcome to come and help, I pay in beer ) for some startling cricket analysis and all I get is old mate @Bones getting smart.

Also, FML. 153 all out. On a pitch no one has lost on batting first ... we're about to set some records I fear.

Kane getting strangled down leg, in a way, was a cruel blow. Nicholls did so well before that but threw his wicket away with a poor shot in the circumstances. Then Colins first ball was pretty much unplayable first up, and that was the middle order fightback fucked.
Didn't see us bowl but 2 wickets is some return

So, how to stop the Pakis getting to 250+ is going to be tricky.
Rough first day. Turned a lot too

@siam I reckon a better batsman than Colin would have patted that "unplayable" delivery harmlessly back down the pitch.

Colin's tour of the U.A.E. hasn't been spectacular with bat in hand....

20 off 7 ... be alright if the second number was (the more usual) balls rather than innings

I've just found over the years that people like Tendulkar, Lara, Williamson etc tend to receive a lot less unplayable balls than lesser batsmen! 🙂

@mn5 is Morrison a dumb dumb when it comes to cricket laws? Maybe Marshall is in the Morrison mould.

I enjoy listening to Danny. His style doesn’t work for a lot of people, but after listening to certain NZ rugby commentators having a whine about the rules, it’s always good to hear someone who sounds like he just loves the game that he’s paid to commentate on.
