First time any NZ football team made semis, first podium finish. Outstanding effort, and all jokes aside, I hope they are recognised at the Halberg awards.

NZ did lose to the eventual winners (Spain) in their SF.

@Mokey I think they will win the team of the year and the overall Halberg. The ABs won't win, Team NZ aren't a factor this year, and it's not an Olympic year either.

@bovidae Pretty stiff competition from the Black Fern 7s who had an excellent year and a gold medal at the CGs.

But you could also make a case for the men's sevens. Both teams won the CG and WC so it would be hard to split them.

The All Whites won it all in 2010 when they didn't even get out of the group. The U17s will be nominated and given the worldwide appeal of football I think they will do the same.

                And seriously: it's Under 17.

Struggling for a nomination for me. Not detracting from them, awesome effort, and it IS soccer, but 3rd in an Age Grade tourny, and a very young age grade, shouldn't get you a Halberg.

Are teams eligible for the emerging star halberg? I can't remember what it's actually called but it generally goes to a young sportsperson who is showing promise. Would seem to be the appropriate category for an age group team but not sure if they're eligible.

Not eligible. This is from the Halberg awards website:

                    Emerging Talent Award
The Emerging Talent Award is designed to identify and assist a young athlete in their quest to become an Olympic, Paralympic and/or World Champion, and hopefully one day win the Halberg Award.

                    Eligibility

Must be a New Zealand Citizen, or hold a Resident or Permanent Resident Visa
Must be an individual athlete or athlete in a team
Must be under 20 years of age as of 30th November of the year nominated
                    Must represent New Zealand
Must not have achieved success at elite international level. Success at an elite international level is defined as having medalled at the Olympic or Paralympic Games or Senior World Championships (or that sports equivalent competition). NB Dispensation can be sought in special circumstances e.g. a non-playing reserve
Past winners of the Award are ineligible

Might be a bit of competition amongst them for nominations then!

Was thinking this morning after seeing the stories and photos in the papers - this is one time that no-one is complaining about a "meaningless" 3rd vs 4th playoff. Looks like one rightly ecstatic team.

If teams were eligible, they would have huge competition for the award from the U18 girls sevens team that won gold at the Youth Olympics.

I haven't followed the Youth Olympics, apart from sevens; were there any individual athletes that would be good candidates for nomination?

That should get some good media. There's some attractive athletes running around playing international football.
