FIXTURES FINALISED FOR WORLD SCHOOLS FESTIVAL
The fixtures for the 2019 World Schools Festival have been released, with a host of mouth-watering matches expected to set the tournament alight at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch. The event will see ten South African teams take on ten sides from the rest of the world in a Ryder Cup-style competition, with the home schools determined to defend the crown they captured in the inaugural festival in 2018. KwaZulu-Natal outfit Glenwood, who finished 2018 as the third-ranked side in South Africa according to www.rugby365.com, will open the tournament against New Zealanders John McGlashan College, who will be making their debut at the festival. (...)Paarl Gimnasium’s other match will be against the Africa Pacific Dragons Select XV, a staple of the World Schools Festival that will be comprised of talent from some of New Zealand’s top schools, including Kelston Boys’ High School, Wesley College and Hastings Boys’ High School. Christchurch Boys’ High School, one of the leading sporting schools in New Zealand, return to the festival and will renew their rivalry with Grey College, a side they lost to 66-28 last year, while they will also face Affies in the penultimate match of the tournament. Hosts Paul Roos kick-off their campaign against fellow debutants Southland Boys’ High School from New Zealand, while they face another Kiwi team in Napier Boys’ High School in the final match of the competition.See the link for the draw (kick-off times TBA)

So St Kent's has finally joined other Auckland schools by accepting the new agreement.
Any further poaching of opposition talent in New Zealand has been essentially banned as part of a ground-breaking new Secondary Schools rugby agreement. On Monday, representatives of 10 schools in Auckland's 1A grade rugby competition met to decide a new set to standards as a result of the proposed boycott of St Kentigern College for their alleged unfair recruitment practices. According to a statement released on Tuesday morning, they've agreed to the following terms: - Not permit any form of player recruitment or inducement to attract a student from another school’s first XV rugby team that is part of an NZRU sanctioned competition. - Not offer a student from another schools first XV Rugby team (that is part of an NZRU sanctioned competition) a partial or full scholarship to attend their school. - Any new to school player who has transferred from an NZRU 1st XV sanctioned competition will be stood down for six 1A competition games, and any potential semi-final or final matches..
Great, they can't poach from other 1st XV teams in NZRU sanctioned competitions, but will this lead to an increase in poaching from the Islands?

I wonder if there is a section in the policy that allows for students who move for family reasons to not be subject to these conditions? Say a father gets a new job in Auckland in March and the family move from Hawkes Bay and the son was in the Hastings Boys 1st XV - is that boy banned from playing six games and the semi and final?

@Nepia What you describe is not recruiting, inducing to attract or offering a scholarship. It would be great if it's spelled out explicitly, but it doesn't sound as if these rules apply to players that move with their family for the reasons you mention.

Oh well, I guess if it happens we'll see then how they handle it.
TBF, we've only seen a press release and not the policy so it might actually specifically address this.

@akan004 Nothing wrong. The South African schools are either in the middle or at the end of their season, so have already played quite a bit of rugby. The NZ schools participating in the World Schools Festival hadn't even started their preseason yet and only played one or two pre-tournament games in Dubai (on their way to SA) against other non-SA schools.
It was the same last year.

@akan004 Pretty stock-standard. Ive toured SA with firstXVs a couple of times, pretty even except for a few 'big' schools both literally and figuratively. Grey College, Paul Roos, Paarl Boys are full-on even compared to St Kents etc. And have always dominated NZ schools. A couple of other reason possibly - It is widely reported that doping is also an issue is schoolboys rugby over there (but who knows?) and also im pretty sure the age is different but not 100% sure that its u19 over there. but anyway not a surprise and does not impact as they mover up the levels.

@Higgins I just checked some fixture lists. I was wrong, they're not at the end of their season. Most fixtures/results lists start half Feb/early March, but they may have very long seasons. I've seen lists finishing in August. Not sure whether the teams on these lists are all 1st XV's, and how many different competitions there are. They seem to play a lot of tournaments/festivals, too.
By the way, interesting to read that player poaching is also an issue in SA.

Just saw someone on Facebook ask exactly the same question about the results of the NZ schools at the World Schools Rugby Festival. The answer he got from someone from South Africa was that basically all the big schools draft the good players from all over the country and grant them full scholarships, just to play rugby. It's seen as a pathway to professional rugby.
