He's an automatic pick in both main formats in an all time NZ XI. Simple as that. Not a huge number who can claim that.

      Rossco MOM.....

Personally I think Nicholls deserved it. Unbeaten and a much better strike rate.

Rosco came to the crease in the 5th over. He was a large part of the rebuilding stage. That explains the strike rate.

The weird thing about this series is that Boult and Southee were both anonymous.. Sodhi the pick of the bowlers, and Lockie is probably now the clear favourite for the 3rd seamer role.
Sodhi is unlucky in that although he was the best of the lot, he will make way for Santner when he's back.

Yeah I guess you're right but the way our top order has performed a big score was always likely.

Curious as to why people dont think Rosscoe gets the plaudits he deserves?

@MN5 Yeah, even when we weren't up to much batting or bowling wise, we were always a top notch fielding outfit. Saving runs, getting run outs, taking the catches. I kinda hate seeing the dropsies, cos some of them were really not tough chances.

Also...I'm not sure Seifert is the answer behind the stumps. Compared to Watling, he is pretty average.

The Marshall twins and Lou Vincent were sensational in particular.

.....which was handy as they weren't much chop at the top order and the latter was a dirty cheating shitcunt.

And Harris, arguably NZ's best ever fielder (Mark Greatbatch was also awesome, especially for a guy his size). We've also been blessed with some absolutely top class keepers and slip fielders over the decades (Coney, both Crowes and Wright were world class slips, Hadlee was a good gully specialist, and Smith was an excellent keeper, and later it was Fleming and Astle in the slips carrying the torch).

Taylor seems to be getting a bit of recognition currently, with Cricinfo, the various NZ news sites and us all giving him major plaudits. Kane might catch up, but otherwise Rosscoe is NZ's greatest ODI batsman, will soon pass Fleming for most runs (less than 300 to go), and people are finally cottoning onto that. http://www.espncricinfo.com/team/_/id/5/new-zealand/ - that's Cricinfo's NZ page, and while the top 3 test batsmen in the past 12 months have very similar runs (Latham 658, Nicholls 658, Kane 651 all in 12 innings), Rosscoe is miles ahead of the rest in ODIs in the past 12 months (Rosscoe 908/ 12 innings, Guptill 528/ 12 innings, Kane 485/ 13 innings).

Other fun stats - Rosscoe has made 50 or more 65 times in his 195 ODI innings for a conversion rate of 1 in 3. Only Kane is higher (46 in 126 innings for a conversion rate of 1 in 2.74 innings), and batting at 3 makes it a little easier than 4. Also, Rosscoe's average at 4 is 52.28 (Kane's is 49.6 at 3)

All in all, lots of room for some man love...

Everyone loves KW and rightfully so but I guess people either don't realise or acknowledge that in Taylor we have someone extremely close to him.

Given he bats #4 in tests - unless I pick either him or Marty out of position, I have to leave one of them out, but I can't do that so I would have Marty at #4 and Roscoe at #5. in ODIs, I actualy think Roscoe is the superior batsman, something I never thought I would say...but his late career surge is so impressive and he owns the best ever ODI innings by a NZer - having taken the time to watch that game in full a couple of times - that 181*, once you take into account match situation, personal travails and the quality of the opposition - just sublime.

Disgrace is way too emotive and hyperbolic a term - he had a very poor series but he was not a disgrace. Disgrace should be something reserved for Cheating or bringing the game into disrepute.

By your standard, KW was an even worse disgrace during the ODI series in UAE, wasting balls in his only innings above 20.

Are you seriously suggesting you leave one of them out just cos they both batted four?

It's not Rugby ( and even then there's heaps of examples of guys moving to accomodate others ) but the thought of you even contemplating leaving one of them out and have Astle, McMillan, Coney or whoever there instead just makes me mad. MAD it does!

@SynicBast tests, not odi, I said victory in UAE

He fell to Shah the same way twice in 3 balls and his last innings when we needed something solid he wogged for 14 balls in an innings and dismissal that would have been deemed pathetic in t20.
As arguably NZs finest batsman, he simply phoned it in all series. Nicholls showed far more application, lucky for us.

Wouldn't be surprised to learn that his detached performance in UAE reset his attitude for our home summer.
In the context of the series his last innings was a disgrace, and listing scores does not tell the story of what he played like.

What did you think of his last innings? After he faced 12 balls what was your assessment of his innings that he was playing? Or are you making an opinion of innings you didn't watch?

Is the point you're trying to make is that he could be even better?

I do get that cricket stats can be misleading, after all Brian Lara got fuck all not outs compared to most of his contemporaries so suffered somewhat there.....But if you analyse every player you'll find lulls in performance at some stage.

@MN5 watching him over there he displayed all the batting nous of CDG. His last innings was a disgrace to all that he is and all that he's achieved.

I suspect his eventual book will mention it, such the outlier it was

CDGH has been a decent test all rounder for the Caps thanks very much.

@Siam to me it looked like he was struggling for form and was trying to play aggressive cricket to get back into form. I agree it looked bad, and was a culmination of his series to date. That sort of innings is an exception though, I couldn't count the number of times he's bailed us out of a hole in the past which is why some people think the word "disgrace" is a bit strong.

Well another pretty disastrous tour for Sri Lanka is nearing an end.

Sri Lanka can take some pride for their fightback to draw the first test, but they were outplayed by the better side overall and really just hanging in there for both games. We've won our last 4 test series in a row - England, WI, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. As a Black Caps fan that is fucking unheard of, this is a real golden era for us and I'm loving every moment of it. We have a very solid test side that has the ability to push anyone, I just wish we had a crack at Aus sans Smith and Warner.

In the ODIs we set the record for most amount of runs in a 3-match series - 1054 - which should tell you all you need to know about our batting and their bowling. Good to see the guys cash in, though they were never really tested. Bowling is a concern, Sri Lanka are better with the bat but not exactly world beaters. We need to get a lot smarter with our plans and execution. Oh and remember how to fucking catch, WTF is up with that.

One final T20 in Auckland to go, because apparently the biggest city in NZ should just get the odd shits & giggles match and nothing much else.

You should petition Jacinderella to start issuing large oval postage stamps - then you could play cricket on one of those instead of the tiny mis-shapen one you currently use! πŸ™‚

It's an absolute embarrassment that Auckland doesn't have a suitable international cricket ground.

He's an automatic pick in both main formats in an all time NZ XI. Simple as that. Not a huge number who can claim that.
