Pakistan need to score about a bazillion runs in the fourth innings, but Australia have left them a lot of time too...

An earlier declaration than I was expecting, but the cracks in the pitch will probably have the last say.

314 to win on the last day, with8 wickets in hand.

Strong advantage Aus, but batting the draw out is really credible

If Pakistan put away the first innings runouts and stupid shots, they can win without doubt.

That was probably part of the thinking to turn down the follow-on: these blokes won't shoot themselves in the foot a second time.

jaysus, really? 315 on a day 5 pitch against that bowling attack is some ask. I can't see Pakistan getting within 100 of it, and struggling to bat out the day.

Mind you, I thought India had no chance at the Gabba, so what do I know. Just looked up - they chased 328 on the last day.

with the benefit of a bit of hindsight, absolutely the right call to bat again. Best chance of winning it without risking losing it.

Only one 'genuine' Pakistani wicket was taken on the fourth day - Azhar Ali was way too slow to review an LBW that he'd gloved. Could be an interesting night tonight. Might depend on how tired Shafique and Azam are, plus the use of the second new ball...

315 in 90 overs is a fair bit faster than they have scored to date and will require them to go searching for runs - best plan is to bat as long as possible without losing wickets and see how they look with 3 hours to go.

That’s what John Bracewell suggested for the Black Caps against South Africa in radio commentary.

From memory it didn’t work but it’s a great idea.

As for batting again: rest the bowlers, have a slog, win the match. Nobody enforces follow on any more.

How is it I've never come across Fawad Alam?

According to his Cricinfo resume he has the highest ever First class batting average for a Pakistani.

He can write his own technical textbook - maybe get McMillan and Chanderpaul as co-authors.

@chris-b Alam very nearly thwarted our march to the World Test Championship Final on the final day at the Bay Oval Boxing Day Test. Alam almost went 11 years between Test matches! https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/40250.html?class=1;template=results;type=allround;view=match

@chris-b A bizarre career. I remember he played a test down here in 2009 in Dunedin (Shane Bond's last test) after scoring a big century against Sri Lanka, got dropped for over 10 years and has come back and made every post a winner.

It's like the Pakistan version of Chris Rogers.

Your going to have to explain this one to me ....

Still looking like a terrible call to me. Draw the most likely winner at the moment. We'll never know if the follow on would have changed that or not, but we can be sure it wouldn't have increased Australias chances of losing (with the benefit of hindsight too).
