Does anyone know the reasoning behind the transfer of a couple of MAC players to Tech mentioned midway through this article? Surprisingly I would be a little disappointed to read this if my guys actively poached these players as I know just how hard it is for clubs to keep existing players without players up and leaving. Even harder to accept players leaving clubs that appear to be doing a lot of good work in the community and are working hard to improve things on the field.

@Higgins Sorry, I have no idea. I must admit that my eyes were stopping at this: "former North Harbour-based halfback-first five-eighth combination" when I first read that article. I was wondering whether these players were asked to come here to try getting a spot in the Magpies. But they didn't make the Magpies WTG, so I assume that's not the case.

@Higgins Did they transfer mid season? The HBRU shouldn't be letting that happen if that's the case.

@Nepia I'm not against it if it is to prevent clubs from defaulting due to lack of players (if the initial club of these players has enough players). I don't know whether this is the case, though.

I think normally MAC would be more in danger of defaulting due to lack of players than Tech?

:face_with_tears_of_joy: Lets not BS it, the big city Napier club Tech are always a much stronger club than the perennially struggling Flaxmere based MAC.

I notice Penatana Smith who was playing for MAC was listed as playing for HRS in the Hawkes bay squad list,so maybe a few have gone.Possibly didn't along with the coach???

That's why I am uncomfortable with this situation. Sure, my guys have not had the best of starts and are not looking all that competitive at the moment but you have to suck it up and take it like a man when that is the case. I hope we did not actively poach them mid season as that would sit very uneasy with me. Tech have had long periods when they have been less than competitive and may even have been out of the top grade when I first joined them back in the late 1970s and have had periods of poor times on and off since then. Hence I can feel empathy for clubs that are struggling (except of course if your club is the combined Napier High School Old Boys-Marist or Taradale).

Hell I even had to witness another club I am associated with winning by 80 points yesterday over a club that lost a number of top players that had used their gym and other facilites all through summer (and all at no cost to them) only to upsticks and depart for other clubs a week or so prior to the start of the first competition game (they also lost a further premier player who transferred to another club mid week as well).

Club rugby is a bit worrying.

There were five defaults across all the grades on Saturday, and on top of that MAC withdrew from the Div 3 comp after the start, as did Havelock Nth from the Colts comp after the start.

Tech Prems had some pretty dry years. I genuinely think the 2002-4 colts side would have given the Prems a run for their money.

That was prior to our homegrown talent coming of age like Ash Dixon, that prop who injured his neck, Leighton Price and Josh Keys.

Snippets from HBT's club rugby write-up:

Busy No 8 Iakopo Mapu was another to shine in the Taradale pack, which had no passengers and was more physical than the Hastings engine room. Halfback Humphrey Sheild was again outstanding and second five-eighth Nathan Ramsay and substitute winger Ollie Sapsford were other valuable contributors in the hosts' backline.

I have noticed that Mapu, Sheild and Sapsford regularly feature as stand-outs in the club rugby write-ups. I have seen Sheild play school rugby, but can't say I've ever seen Mapu and Sapsford.

... who benefited from some classy direction from Magpie Lincoln McClutchie in both the fullback and first five-eighth positions after spending time as injury cover at the Highlanders ...

I haven't seen anything on social mediat that suggests he's back in Dunedin, despite the Gatland's foot injury against the Sunwolves. Doesn't mean he isn't there, of course.

... Central had a good pack with Geoff Cridge and Tom and Ben Parsons playing," Texans manager Cyril Whitburn said.

Magpies props Mark Braidwood and Tim Farrell and in-form lock Elijah Martin provided plenty of grunt for the hosts' pack ...

Glad to see Cridge and Farrell are still in one piece and playing. May it last!

Magpies loosie Josh Kaifa was dynamic at No 8 in his first full game of the season for Tremains Andrew Clark Clive.

                              There he is!

@Higgins Did they transfer mid season? The HBRU shouldn't be letting that happen if that's the case.

                                      HBRU regulations:

                                      6. TRANSFERS
                                      **(e) Players transferring require:

                                      1. A signed release from the present club
                                      2. Approval from the HBRFU - applications must be with HBRFU 48 hours before players are eligible to play.
Clubs have seven (7) days to respond to a Transfer application. If a response , positive or negative, has not been received by HBRFU within the seven (7) day period, the Transfer will be automatically approved by HBRFU.

                                      (g) No transfers will be approved within four (4) weeks of championship playoffs (i.e. Maddison Trophy playoffs)**

Under these current regulations, the latest a player can transfer is before 15 June.

                                        NOBM - 65
                                        Tamatea - 14

Great afternoon in the sun wearing shorts and a t-shirt in May and watching rugby. Gotta love a Bay day.

Fatilofa at 7 and Falieva at the best of the forwards from the good guys, with Drew and Buckley the best of the backs. Ellery Wilson appears to be stacking on the pounds, moving towards a Weepu body shape...
