@Tim good , matson especially has been a waste of time and barnes at defence was poor last season.

As I've said previously, Gatland inherited Colin Cooper's assistants, and neither Barnes (forwards) or Matson (defence) have been good enough this season. If McMillan is being groomed to take over in 2024 then he should have some say in the appointment of the new assistants. Gatland has favoured the rush defence but the Chiefs have been guilty of being too passive on defence, which highlights to me that Matson was fully in charge of the defensive system used. Getting a new forwards coach similar to Coventry would be a good start.

Aaron Goile's article on Stuff says that Michael Allardice is a confirmed departure along with Falcon and Manu. Maybe he is going overseas because I can't believe the coaches wouldn't want to retain some experience amongst a very green locking group.

@Bovidae Interesting. Allardice hasn't been confirmed yet for the Magpies, either. That may still come, or may be caused by his injury. But reading that, it may also be because he's leaving? Geez, now I really hope the HBRU sign Bryn Evans.

Agree with Fletcher Smith. But, would have thought Tom Franklin and James Tucker targets at lock. Would like to see Selby-Rickett starting for Chiefs too. Matt Garland may be worth a look for midfield if still around.

@ARHS rather not have Selby-Rickit but to each is own. Was surprised Tucker went north. Always thought Franklin was underrated.

Are people ever going to move on from what Selby-Ricket did? The guy has been punished. Time to give him the chance to turn things around.

If Franklin is back in NZ for good he would be a great addition to the Chiefs. Franklin provides lineout height and heaps of experience. McMillan will be in a good position to convince him to sign.

Ah Kuoi, McWhannell and Vaa’i all have plenty of promise but are green at SR level.

I would think that the Chiefs are looking for 2 locks so that Brown can go back to being a loose forward instead of an undersized lock.

There is a hell of a lot of SR players you could lump into that category , lots of things do not get made public we would have a lot less depth if we all thought that way.

Yes same scenario as Reece but apparently it’s different in some people’s eyes.

@Chris I'm not saying he doesn't deserve a second chance, this happened less than a year ago, a fine and a 4 week ban before the season started is hardly a punishment. At least he hasn't been thrown into the All Blacks.

                                @Stargazer

Personally I think that he shouldn't be playing professional rugby right now, but given that he is, I'd prefer him to not wear a Chief's jersey.

The organization that committed to giving him the support to rehabilitate himself (the Landers) should be committed to helping him rehabilitate. So, for him to move on now would indicate that he's either not rehabbed or isn't good enough.

Either way, no thanks. In a couple of years perhaps the kid will be a good player, perhaps an AB. But he still kicked a guy in the head when he was down, and that guy will never be able to do a bunch of things as a result. Perhaps because I've had a illness that took playing rugby away me, I see some of those things a bit more clearly than I did.

on past actions, I'm pretty sure I couldn't understand how Moala got off (and if you look here, you'll see some discussion).

Anyway, setting that aside - Dunshea, if he could be signed, would be awesome.

@gt12 I was mainly expressing my surprise about (and disagreement with) the selective outrage when players like Reece and Selby-Rickit are getting signed/called-up, but not when other players with similar stories get contracts / black jerseys.

What S-R did was way more serious than any other recent example (Losi Filipo excluded), considering the extensive (physical) damage he did to his victim. I expected a response similar to that of Filipo, who (eventually) lost his contract and had to earn back the right to play rep rugby again.

Yep, but I don't know if it's that selective - I don't think we can search back that far, but I'm pretty sure that here was a lot of discussion about Savea in 2013. As there was about Moala in 2015.

Certainly, after a time, that discussion dies down, but in the context of the current discussion, I don't think I'd have wanted Moala at the Chiefs in 2016 or 2017.

I'm of the opinion that young people should be afforded the opportunity to show contrition and take steps to ensure that their lives aren't irrevocably ruined as a result of one act. One of the best ways to achieve that is to not remove their best avenue to make a positive impact in their lives.

Geez - I didn't realise the storms I would create. Just think that having 4 high calibre locks, and gaps in other areas at Highlanders, that there might be scope for contract releases to improve opportunities for all players and teams. Same goes for other teams in various positions. I really think the depth of our Super squads has plummeted - particularly with locks, and am hoping for a slightly better spread of talent next year.

Agree with Fletcher Smith. But, would have thought Tom Franklin and James Tucker targets at lock.

Your more then welcome to Blackwell he’s a hardworking player, do you want him yet 😂

On a serious note I would rather Allardice signed for the Canes instead of going overseas I understand his reasons.
