@Stargazer I can't even remember off the top of my head who the Canes 10s are? Isn't one of the Marshalls one of them? :man_facepalming_medium-dark_skin_tone:

As an entire country we aren't that great at developing them. The Blues haven't had a decent one since Carlos. The Chiefs have had to go back to Cruden. The Cane's haven't had a good one since the solid Holwell.

The South Island franchises doing the heavy lifting. Mehrts. Dan (sigh). Tony Brown. Sopoaga. Stephen Brett...

The Chosen One was before Cruden. And we went back to him as well.

It looks like these non-squad members are training with the Canes:

Joel Hintz (Magpies - prop), Logan Crowley (Southland - halfback), Trent Renata (Wellington - first five eighth)

@Nepia The best of them is James Marshall, then there's a reasonably inexperienced Fletcher Smith, and then there's JGB, who is well below SR level.

Edited to add that the Canes coaches have said that they're not seeing a first five role for Jordie. Now that Plum has gone, who knows, that may change.

Jesus, (hometown bias warning alert for you blokes who care about that) but how the fuck did McClutchie not get into the Canes amongst that motley bunch?

Fletcher Smith looks ok, I think will develop, JGB is just NPC standard, McClutchie would have been my pick.

@Darren Fletcher Smith was horrible last year, both him, JGB and Marshall are all journeyman. Atleast we have plenty of weapons in the backline to hopefully counter their journeyman status.

@Canes4life Would you feel any more comfortable if Trent Renata is used in a competition game at any stage. From memory he mainly played fullback in the Mitre10 Cup last season.

@Higgins nope, he is okay at NPC level but I can't see him doing anything special at Super level. Slim pickings this year I'm afraid. The fourth worst thing to happen in the Canes disastrous offseason after losing Barrett, Ardie to injury and their coach to All Blacks, was the signing of Kobus van Wyk. Surely you keep that spot for someone like McLutchie who has already shown he has the ability to be quality Super level first five. I personally found that it was a waste of a signing when we already have so much depth through the centres and the outside backs.

Yep. Saffa journeyman in a position we have heaps of talent in NZ is idiotic at best and dodgy at worst.

The idiot who selected him (and chased a giant Saffa lock while playing a midget NZ one all season) is now with the ABs. WTF.

Do I remember that you have to get special dispensation to select a non NZ eligible player? How that selection got through is just plain odd.

                                Not really a surprise:

HURRICANES ANNOUNCE CAPTAINCY FOR 2020 SEASON

The Hurricanes have announced the captaincy for the 2020 Super Rugby season will be shared between TJ Perenara and Dane Coles.

The duo has played 237 games for the Hurricanes collectively and continue to bring a wealth of experience to the team

Coles has been a team pillar for the last four years, captaining the side since 2016. In his absence, Perenara has shown he is also a natural leader by stepping into the role.

@Stargazer great combo. Both need to be on the park for the majority of the season if we want to challenge for the business end of the competition.

@Canes4life Yeah, I really hope Coles can stay injury free this season!

Considering how bad we look, we desperately need him to!

HURRICANES SQUAD NAMED FOR PRE-SEASON CRUSADERS CLASH
                                          Thu 16th Jan

The Hurricanes coaching staff have named a 34-man squad to take on the Crusaders in Ashburton this Saturday.

It’s the first of two pre-season matches the Hurricanes will play, before launching into their 2020 Investec Super Rugby campaign on February 1.

Jason Holland is set for his first outing as head coach and says he’s looking forward to seeing how the players have progressed in the off-season.

“I’ve seen these guys giving it everything at training in preparation for this season. I know how much they want to make an impact this year.”

Hooker, Ricky Riccitelli will captain the squad, which is littered with experience including flanker, Vaea Fifita and Outside Centre, Vince Aso.

Several debutants have made the starting line-up, including former Highlanders star Tyrel Lomax and South African wing, Kobus Van Wyk.

Lomax says he’s excited about pulling on the black and yellow jersey for the first time.

“It’ll be different, that’s for sure, but I’m proud to be part of the squad and looking forward to our first hit-out.”

The match will feature rolling substitutions played over two 40-minute halves.

The reserves bench features a mix of Hurricanes squad members and younger players who have been training with the group.

Hurricanes All Black, Ngani Laumape is also featured in the squad, but will start the game on the bench.

Tickets for the clash are still available and are priced at $25 for adults and $15 for children

The game will kick-off at Ashburton Showgrounds from 4pm.
