Made 100 more than he would have done if Leach hadn't overstepped. He may have helped save the Ashes in the last game only to lose them in the next ....

    Well... 93 or so 😉

    But a spinner overstepping? Jeez...

A cardinal sin. I saw Roy(?) drop a sitter of a catch in the slips off Broad around midnight NZT too, the Poms had a day to forget in the field

Roy is fucked - can't bowl, can't bat, can't catch.

They're not even letting him open at this point. Sent Denly out there then the big goofball as nightwatchman.

so, this Steve Smith ( i hope i pronounced that correctly) bloke is quite good at the crickets.

          His last 9 Ashes innings? 1,149 runs @ 144.

          3 centuries
          2 double centuries
4 half centuries (one not out)

Where is all England's shit talk now?

And now England's shiny new toy looks broken.

50 overs terrifying a bunch of County Cricketers on a List A wicket is different to Test Cricket, it would seem.

@Donsteppa Bit OTT Warner's position would be in danger if Oz had any credible alternative.

Do agree that his best option is trying to hit his way into some sort of form as "batting responsibly" clearly isn't his forte.

Working out where his off stump is wouldn't hurt either

Smith is on the verge of winning a series single-handedly. It's phenomenal, and I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it.

@barbarian As everyone says - not since Bradman. Batsmen have had big series since then but usually in a batting line-up also making comfortable runs.

The size of the hundreds is so relevant too. We were 5/241 when he notched his ton. There's still a very real chance we could be bowled out for under 300 if he loses his wicket for a Mark Waugh-esque 104.

Instead he kept his focus (and his luck), and put us in a winning position.

Same goes for the first test - a massive difference between 100 and 140 in the context of both innings.

@barbarian and each innings is almost like seeing him for the first time, such is his uniqueness and obvious success. Listening to warne and ponting you can hear the same thoughts in their commentary.

Hard to plan for a guy who has no plan, he basically plays each ball as he sees it. He could be playing in the back yard or on a beach, it would be crazy trying to analyze a guy like that

You can plan for him. England actually found two successful formulas in the first two tests - target the period when Smith is on 140 where he tends to lose concentration, and actually try and kill him to take him out of the game.

Sadly for England it appears he thwarted both of those approaches in this game.

I actually think people commenting on the Ashes don't give England enough credit. They have worked Smith out.

Let him bat for over 8 hours and get 200+.
Then when he goes on the slog in anticipation of the declaration - he looks as vulnerable as any batsman.
And it worked for them yesterday. Good work England.
