Great win. Deserved win, too. Latham, Watling, and CdG really stood up with the bat and Southee bowled well.

In saying that though, some of those top order guys need to head for some net sessions. By his own sky-high standards, Kane had a pretty miserable test time.

That dismissal in this test showed he hadn't snapped out of one-day mode - that's his bail out single to 3rd man which doesn't work so well with 2 slips in place.

At 126-4 with so much time lost, that is an extraordinary victory, set up by Latham and the perpetually stubborn BJ - still didn't think they could rip through the Lankans on the last day though.

BJ has 17 100+ partnerships now - all of them for the 5th wicket or lower. Plus 90+ with Craig, Brownlie, Kane and Sodhi. Of the 17, 6 times the partnership started with the total below 100.

    McCullum 3
    Williamson 2
    Taylor 2
    Nicholls 2
    de Grandhomme 2
    Latham 1
    Neesham 1
    Boult 1
    Henry 1
    Southee 1
    Anderson 1

@KiwiPie BJ is clutch. Kind of like some of the Aussie wicket keepers - it wasn't that they scored heaps of runs, it's that they did when they were really needed to influence a game. Haddin (spits) and Healey both seemed to be like that.

Absolutely delighted with this win. Winning overseas, even against Sri Lanka, is really tough. They have some real worries around batting and (illegal) bowling, but for us to get up overseas is fantastic. Also delighted for Latham. He has quietly been compiling a world class record un-noticed by many as we can collectively get stuck on 'black caps suck' mode.

The crazy thing about Watling is how uncomfortable he looks coming in at 300/4 compared to how assured he is at 50/4. He reminds me of VVS Laxman in that way. Both guys who only seem to perform when the rest of the top order fails.

So stoked with this win. After they were 5 down I thought the light or maybe some late rain would see it end prematurely. But these guys have foight!! Great to see Latham bounce back strongly after a shocking run in ODI's - we know now he thought he was actually playing test cricket all along!! Hopefully Kane clicks that he's playing 20/20's next week and doesn't roll out some test match play.

Bank those points lads and well done on retaining the #2 spot!

@Paekakboyz Kane isn't playing T/20 next week. He's off for some (well earned) RnR

Latham’s record is absolutely nuts for an opener - 79 innings at 44 with 15 fifties and 10 hundreds. On track to be one of our best ever.

Awesome win after the disappointment of the first test. We have a bloody strong side in all forms at the moment, definitely a golden era by Black Caps standards.

The caveat is no test centuries against England, Aust or India so he has an opportunity to rectify that. He likes playing Sri Lanka though.

Were does Watling rate now amongst NZ test wicketkeepers? He has the more dismissals, runs and centuries than McCullum did as a keeper.

I don't know what the answer is but McCullum has to be in the team as Captain.

Given that Crowe is probably batting four I think we're well covered on the captaincy front.

You couldn't find two more different guys that McCullum and Watling though. Somewhat weirdly I think I'd rate Watling as the number one keeper but pick McCullum for the all time team.

With a top order of (a quickly assembled all time team of) Turner, Latham, Kane, Crowe, Taylor, having McCullum coming in next would be a much better fit than Watling.

Colin deserves a lot of credit. Run rate was vital on day 4 and he played a gem. I'm aware of his limitations but when he clicks like this test, it's some of the best technical hitting you'll see.

Watling is the most unsung gun in the modern era. Would keep for Australia and England

Both were critical to victory. BJ is essential, when the aussie attack has us 4 or 5 down for not much he will be called on again to bail us out

I was a pretty harsh critic of the guy, but he's got better and better. Test cricket has been the making of him as an international player, he just seems to be much more comfortable with his game and able to play much simpler now.

gutsy win, and far more proactive leadership than i have come to expect.

Very good stuff team, love it.

Great few days for test cricket

We need a wicket to break the momentum.

SL 112-2 in the 15th over.

Hard to say what these conditions will do for the BCs batting second. Rain is predicted.

Excellent catch Guppy. Southee with the good cross seamer and Mendis gone.

                                      Mendis with a great innings.

Southee 2-20 off his 4. Great bowling.

Rance bowling the last over and after going for 6, bowled a brilliant full length ball and we get a run out.
