What a fucking epic edition. Did the usual watching it end to end drinking Belgian beers with the guys I did the sportive version a few years back.

I think it’s the first time that debutants have filled the podium. Well done to Colbrelli for a smart race but you’ve gotta love the way that Van der Poel rides even though sometimes it might not be conducive to his chances of winning.

Even if you don’t follow cycling that is one of the hardest sporting endeavours out there.
    Brutal, vicious challenge.

Well, I guess the first year the podium were all debutants, but yeah. Colbrelli and van der Poel aren't exactly noobs though -- the loss of the 2020 race means that some people are debutants that shouldn't really be.

It's a thing that always amazes me about cycling that a sprinter almost always wins a sprint, no matter how tired. Van der Poel needed to shed the others 10 km out.

Even Sagan with all his skills wasn't immune. Cant do much when someone washes out in front of you an a corner though.
How was van Aert in the Arenberg though? Single file on grade 5 pave and the guy right in front goes down yet somehow he stayed up!

I've said before but if anyone gets the chance, get a car and a map, plot your route and its an awesome day out. We did it on the fly after a weekend doing the battlefields and got caught out at the start from the closed roads but once we worked out how they do it managed to see 4 sections.

I think this is George's last ride for TJV.

Second in this race last year to Fuglsang, but the field looks a bit too rich for George this year.

Not sure TJV will be sentimental enough to let him have a crack. I think he'll probably be riding to support Roglic.

George talking a bit about what's in store for him this year - but, with not many details.

Sounds quite promising - but, I can't see him being a team leader in any of the Grand Tours.

Egan Bernal pretty well farked for at least this year...

Bernal was transferred to the University of La Sabana Hospital near the capital. His team said he fractured his right femur, right kneecap, several ribs and a vertebra and suffered a punctured lung and chest trauma.

Seems to be possibly worse than Froome's crash and he was nowhere near in his first season back.

Been enjoying the Lanterne Rouge channel on Youtube, with highlights of different little tours as we start heading towards the fun stuff later in the year.

Cavendish has been going gangbusters of late.

@gt12 thanks for this, will look it up.

Fun stuff starts this weekend with Omloop, the first of the one day Flandrian races. The next 2 months are my favourite of the year with the upcoming cobbled classics and 3.5 monuments (I’m counting Strade Bianche as half a monument, as imo it should be given this status). Proper cycling.

The UAE tour is sooooo boring.

You can basically FFWD through to the last 2km on each stage unless shots of sand get you going.

Good field though and the sprints are fun.

Haven't watched my recording of the Oomloop yet but caught up with the UAE

George Bennett immediately justified his salary doing a perfect job for his team and for Pogacar on the climbs.

If that's his team role though the poor bugger is never going to see a stage win.

George's schedule for the next few months...

After the UAE Tour I’m back home in Andorra for three weeks before the Volta a Catalunya [21-27 March] and then it’s almost straight into the Tour of the Basque Country [3-8 April]. From there, I’ll take on the Ardennes classics [Amstel Gold Race, La Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege] for the first time, which I’m excited about. It’s then onto the [Critérium du] Dauphine [5-12 June]. After, hopefully it’s the Tour de France [1-24 July]. It’s never locked in this early but I’ll throw my hat into the ring. As for the end of the year, we have a lot of stuff pencilled in but you can take that with a pinch of salt in February.

                                    Quite an interesting interview...

Quite a strong field. Looks like George will be supporting Joao Almeida.

UAE has recruited pretty heavily in the off-season and have pretty much as strong of a roster as TJV and Ineos. They picked up Almeida, George and Marc Soler - among others.

@chris-b I see both Trek - Segafredo and EF Education-EasyPost have each found a spot amongst their seven riders for guys from Eritrea of all places. Is this cycling's equivalent of Eric the Eel or Eddie the Eagle or are they decent riders? It clearly can't be because they brought their way in via sponsorship money they have backing them but still hard to believe that Eritrea has more riders taking part than NZ has.

@higgins they’ve got some talent coming through. Girmay (21yo) is an U23 world champion silver medalist and was part of the very small group at the pointy end of Milan San Remo yesterday, mixing with the absolute rock stars of pro cycling.
