Metal by the time of the "Battle of Britain". Flight controls were still fabric I think. Fuselage was timber stringers covered in doped linen. Took about 2/3 of the amount of time to build as a spitfire. 10,000 hour off the top of my head.
Can well believe it. Just building a Guillows Spitfire balsa & tissue kit and the elliptical wings - groundbreaking for their time - are a real bitch to cover properly.
Bloody nightmare.

This guy arguably did it first. But in true kiwi style didn't make a deal out of it so he is a footnote instead of the main man

"Late in life he became bitter and paranoid and was admitted to a mental hospital in 1951, where he remained until his death."Nor that his nickname was "bamboo Dick", which is a bit unfortunate these days.

That's the thing about nicknames, they can stick forever. Reminds of 9 year old CF Jnr wanting to change his fortnite handle to 'one pump' because of his lethal ability with a shotgun. I advised him not to because (none of the chicks want a guy named one pump) just because
