One-off competitions in the Hurricanes Region:

      Hurricanes Life Members Cup

Each member Provincial Union is responsible for determining it's team to compete in this 2020 knock-out competition for boys, with four "Wild-Card" entries to be selected by the Council's Operations Committee, from entries received by Provincial Unions.

The "Hurricanes Life Members Cup" celebrates the important role that boys' secondary school rugby plays in encouraging community participation by school-leavers across the many Clubs comprising the Hurricanes region. The intent of the Cup is to promote rugby within our Heartland and non-traditional rugby schools. Provincial Unions when selecting their representative should be mindful of this intent.

      Quarter-Final 1

      (Winner progresses to Semi-Final 2)

Wainuiomata College (Wellington) vs Makoura College (Wairarapa Bush)
Wednesday, 19 August, 1.20pm - Makoura College, Masterton

St John's College (Hawkes Bay) vs Horowhenua Combined Colleges
Wednesday, 19 August, 2.00pm, Ongley Park, Palmerston North

      Semi-Final 1

Thursday, 20 August, 1.00pm, Manukura, Palmerston North

      Rex Kerr Cup (Girls' competition)

Semi-Finalists will be drawn from the following regional-based Provincial Unions :

      3. Wairarapa-Bush & Horowhenua-Kapiti
      4. Wellington

      Quarter-Final 1

      (Winner progresses to Semi-Final 2)

Otaki Te Rāhui Kura (Horowhenua-Kapiti) - defeated Kapiti College by 25 points to 22.

@Stargazer The Ta$man of Hawkes Bay, Lindersfarne, should walk that comp, they're not really a Heartland or non-traditional rugby school like the others seem to be.

@Nepia Yeah, I have the impression that all schools in the Hurricanes region are eligible that don't play Super 8 or Wellington Premiership. And then, the provinces need to be represented, too. I guess the HBRU could have nominated Te Aute instead, but maybe they weren't available for some reason. Or Lindisfarne is one of those "Wild-Card" entries. Your guess is as good as mine!

Edited to add that I hope Hastings Girls smash St Mary's. Last year, HGHS ended up in the SF against Manukura (and lost); this year, they could reach the final.

@Stargazer Yeah, I have no idea how the comp works and all good for them to be getting some games in (is the CNI canned this year?), I was just taking an opportunity to get a dig in at both Lindersfarne and @Chris-B in one go. 🙂

@Stargazer I'm off to watch St Marys (my whangai's daughters play for them) play Wainuiomata up at Wainui very shortly so will give you and idea how they are going. I have watched the smash all Wgtn opposition in earlier games but they have often been only ten or twelve aside as their opponents struggle to muster 15 players.

@Stargazer Is was a drizzly sort of start to the game which was played 12 aside. The drizzle had thankfully gone by half time but it certainly had a big effect with numerous spilled passes in what was a fairly physical, but penalty dominated, sort of game. Each team had long periods of continuous possession but you always had the impression the the visiting St. Marys were the better side, if not by all that much. They had a slightly more confrontational pack with the loosehead prop and number 8 to the fore there. The final score was something like St. Marys 22 - 19 Wainuiomata 4 tries to 3. To say this was a vintage St. Marys performance would be the understatement of the year. They are miles away from the side that won the NZ Schoolgirls title in 2018 but this was their first hitout against a team that actually offered much of a challenge so would be a good wakeup call for them. Still remains to be seen what the standard of the other decent teams like Manukura and Fielding Ag are. Until then no real comparison of the hopes of Hurricanes Region schoolgirls teams chances of success can't really be made with any sort of certainty.

Speaking to one of the Sky guys the OBU trucks had to drive up from Wellington while staff came from Welly, Hawke's Bay and even Chch.

Angus Ta'avao was the co-commentator so he can't be in the Auckland bubble.

St Andrews first loss I think.

@Bovidae Yep, and to a charging Goon HS side. They're doing what Burnside and to a lesser extent Aranui HS threatened to do in years gone by and really shaking things up amongst the traditional, largely boy's only schools. If there is a national co-ed tourney this year, they'll clean up.

@shark There is no Top 4 tournament this year so the local competitions will be the only titles up for grabs.

Rangiora has often been the SI representative. If St Kents declare for the co-ed, like they did last year, they usually win it.

I thought St Andrews had been winning it?

@shark Only once in the last 10 years. If you mean the SI, I don't know, but I have watched Rangiora play on TV for the Top 4.

@Bovidae Maybe I just thought that because STAC are the SI representative more often than not? But that could be wrong too!!
