@rotated Deaker was a dick. He may have been good once, but even I'm not old enough to remember.
What I didn't like was his complete ignorance about anything other than rugby and to an extent cricket. Even with those two sports he was quite often wrong. He was the kind of mouthy git you'd avoid in the pub - except you'd never find him there of course. -

Henry was ropable at the way that Deaker turned on him after the 2007 RWC to sell his book. Went from singing his praises to throwing him under the bus... not cool

@nzzp The campaign against Mains (if he is reappointed I will not go to S.A. - what's that you say all expenses paid junket to the Republic, where do I sign0 the America's Cup thing. As I said he may have been good once but he was just an egotistical, lazy, embittered old man for the 20 or so years I heard him.

It's funny how time change though. At the time it did seem like a betrayal and Henry seemed really hurt by it.
In the post-Twitter age I reckon Ted would come off precious. Deaker was a blowhard that is what blowhards do. The TV version of Deaker on Sport was just him yelling at the screen before and interview wasn't it?

@booboo Pretty decent assessment, booboo - in that I agree with most of it.
I usually found Devlin's hyper style pretty amusing and also parked Vietch's reputation - beyond that he seemed to have more connections into NZ sport than anyone else and was usually a very good interviewer.
I mainly listened to RS in the car, but to be honest, I switched stations about 10 days ago, when all they seemed to have to talk about was corona virus. Hope they come back when this all blows over. Don't think I'm a likely audience for a streaming service, DM - unless you can make it come out of the car radio!

Sums up Deaker well. Deaker's treatment of Mains was the exact opposite to Henry in that he later had him (Mains) as a guest on his show after the earlier criticism. I do remember listening to Deaker's meltdown on air. Sad and amusing at the same time.
When I last listened to RS Telfer was still a host so I wouldn't know what it has been like in recent years.

Deaker: full of himself and had been in decline as a host for a long time before finally being axed.
Veitch: actually quite good when not banging on about getting "on the large" or trying to come across as besties with any sportspeople he or the public regarded as cool. Latterly, you also had to somehow compartmentalise his personal offences also, which was pretty much impossible.
Telfer: also full of his own self-importance and the worst I've ever heard for cutting people off at zero notice if they disagreed with him and were actually making a good fist of it. Pathetic. But at least he was stongly opinionated, something all too often missing in recent hosts. The BTE was a must-listen but could also be infuriating.
Devlin: a screaming head. Very annoying. Also cringe-worthy how he'd bang on ad-nauseum about the "modern generation" and dick picks etc, and the stupid voice he'd put on when trying to take the piss out of any marketing types. One of the worst, and crazily over-rated. IMHO really fortunate to have had a few lucky breaks in a small local industry.
Kent Johns: the best PM show host I've heard and the only time I intentionally tuned into RS in the afternoon rather than listening to music or making phone calls. Not afraid to express an opinion but also considerate of others.
Mark Richardson: he's the only one I'll rate who hadn't had his own solo slot, as I think it's hard to call out individuals when operating as part of a team. I liked him on the breakfast show and I think much of the criticism that follows him around is either unwarranted or based on people completely misunderstanding his sense of humour which often appears to be based on getting a rise out of people. -
@Chris-B Agreed that it needs to be available for commutes/driving. Podcasts are already doing that and some hybrid of live/near-live is what I'm thinking of how I can deliver.

Veitch was a great interviewer at times, but I couldn't separate his personal life actions and lack of remorse with his skillset.
I'd also stone cold forgotten Kent Johns. Quality fella, and really good.
Disagree with you on Devlin. Early Devlin was remarkable - took the industry in a direction it wasn't ready for; irreverent, but informed and insightful. That faded over the last 20 years though. Still capable of flashes of brilliance, but not consistently.
Overall, I despair at the lack of proper commentary and analysis around the place. The level is so superficial - on here you get deeper insight than most media outlets (which is a real worry).

I probably shouldn't be anyone's target audience.
I think I've had to sit through too many boring fucking conference presentations, so I actually hate podcasts.
If someone writes an article (or a paper) you can pretty much skim it in 30 seconds and decide if it warrants more attention. But, with podcasts, there's little way of telling whether you're about to waste 30 minutes of your life.
Invest 30 seconds in a podcast and it seems to me that usually you get as far as, "Hi, um it's Bill and Ben here from the ah Flowerpot men podcast. How are you today Ben.....?"
And I'm out.

@Chris-B Are you not listening to the right Podcasts? Podcast halted any radio listening I do, and unlike the radio you can just turn off it the presenter annoys you and start another rather than suffer through Deaker being a dick, Lose being a Deaker, Vietch being a twat, Telfer being a boring contrarian (it only works if you don’t do it for everything) etc etc.

@Nepia I'm not listening to any - which seems about right.
I pretty much only listen to the radio in the car, when I'm driving - so the time is already being utilized.
If the presenters annoy me enough (or usually some fucking dull as ditchwater talkback caller), I just turn them off.
Currently, I've switched to Brian FM, which is actually pretty good.

I'm pretty gutted it got the a**se, for all its faults it was a nice escape and generally was a good listen. I've probably listening to RS in its various forms Sports Roundup >> Radio Sport for about 30 years. It's definitely been a bit part of the background noise for a while.
I think it lost its way lately, the cost of live sport must have weighed heavily on them, so they cut it back a lot. I remember when they used to carry a lot more, and that's what I really liked. The constant talkback I could take or leave.
I expect it will make a comeback in some form. They'll probably want to leverage of iHeartRadio, carrying all their league, soccerfootball, and rugby coverage primarily on that, and then simulcasting on ZB for the big matches. Whether that will bring in the necessary funds from advertisers is another question though.
Some things I miss from Radio Sport I'd like them to bring back: I can't recall its exact name, but the interview that Graeme Hill would do with past sporting greats (opening with Reelin' in the Years by Steely Dan). Radio Sports/Sports Roundup used to also play those classic clips of old cricketers spinning yarns of tours past, they probably haven't played them in 20+ years though. (Jim Laker(?) describing the tour of the West Indies way back in the day)

@Stargazer We is me (Paul Bains) and people that I have been collaborating with producing content on DrivingMaul for the last 6 or so years. There's about 6 of us involved so far and we are all doing this for free at the moment hoping to build it into something.
You might know Steven Harris who's contributes on this forum, he's part of the we. Also the only one with any radio experience at all.
That's good as we aren't restricted by how it "should" be done but also means we don't really know what hurdles we are going to come across.
