@mariner4life unless you have some interest in a particular team, why would you?

The only kiwi rugby I've watched all year was the North v South Basketball game where defense was optional.

We'd retort if any of us had managed to get through more than 5 minutes of your development comp.

...thats the point...RA or the franchises seem to do very little to attract new interest, even those of us that love the sport dont see any effort, your average joe probably isn't

since moving here ive been lured into following two different aussie rules teams

I guess you probably wouldn't notice not being particularly interested, but Fox have been aggressively working to reduce the market price of Rugby in Aus as it's still a major drawcard for the ailing Foxtel network.

Initial lowball offer for the rights, endless hatchet jobs in Ruperts rag papers, sacked pretty much the entire commentary team except for the unbearable Kafe and Kearns, stripped away pretty much all advertising for the game even in NSW and Qld. Not to mention the 'captains' witch hunt (lead by bought and paid for Kearns) which got Raelene sacked and resulted in exactly nothing else happening.

Rupert's mad Raelene took the TV rights to market.

As an aside, Loige has spent more money than RA could ever could on trying to make rugby a thing in Melbourne and have largely failed, even with a very successful storm team. It's hard to undo a hundred years of history.

@Derpus and i guess thats the next point..why insist on the five teams when one is pushing shit up hill in melbourne and another is currently getting flogged week in week out and on the other side of the world (perth), why not focus on a battle that is possible to win, three relatively strong teams with some good rugby history

That argument might have some basis in reality if Fox hadn't clearly stated which sports they considered prime and made it obvious they don't see value in the others.

So Fox talking up products they'll want to secure again in the near future is what exactly? It's not difficult for most people to determine value by crowd attendances and viewership. Apparently Fox and Optus et al have people who have some experience and capability in the field.

@antipodean right, and cutting advertising funding for a product will do what to viewership numbers?

As someone above said, there is next to no visibility for Rugby in Aus. I don't think it's particularly crazy to suggest that it's to Fox's advantage to keep it that way until they secure the rights again.

Was it to Fox's advantage while they had the rights and people weren't watching nor attending?

How hard is it to understand Fox don't see the value? Apparently neither does any other broadcaster. Why would that be do you think?

@antipodean maybe you are right. But if so, why did they bid for it initially?

They still plumped for A-League who's figures are significantly worse than Rugby's. I'm not really convinced.

@Kiwiwomble Just as an example: 'OzTam reported the A-League’s season restart saw just 12,000 viewers on Fox Sports for the Friday night matchup, followed by 9,000 the next day for the second matchup on Fox Sports.'

                                  https://ministryofsport.com.au/a-league-ratings-are-disappointing/

Even the Rebels have been pulling 40-50k plus an additional (rumoured, no official figures) 25% -40% on Kayo.

I think the Semi-final attendance figure will be telling. It's reportedly open to 25k people. TV figures for the final will also be interesting. A-league final got about 84k supposedly.

so, in short, there is absolutely nothing wrong with rugby in Australia, it's strong and peachy and a desirable product

it's all NZ's fault, and Foxtel's fault, and Rupert's fault, and the ex-Wallaby Captain's fault. If they all fucked off it would be the '90s again.

@mariner4life fucken hell, i never said anything like that? There's loads wrong - the majority of it self inflicted by RA. I've never said anything other than this. Fox are being dicks though, and cutting a team won't fix the underlying issues.

That's misleading - those A-League games were also on free to air live in Australia so people just watched them on free to air instead of Fox.

@KiwiMurph It's not misleading when talking about the value to Fox - which is what we are discussing.

What do Fox care about FTA figures?
