Sure the American owners have a hard on for the NBA model but the NBA is the pinnacle of that sport. For football that is still the international game. Is Kane really going to abandon England and the World Cup for a few more million he doesn't really need?

I'm not sure that's true. There is still the romantic side of representing your country, but i get the impression for the fans and the vast majority of players, Club comes first.

@mariner4life In typical Fern fashion, I agree but I don't agree.

I think fans hate the friendlies and don't get excited by qualifying tournaments because England have consistently achieved at that level for a couple of decades. But when the actual tournaments come round. ING-GA-LUND!!!

Even if they're shite. What I enjoy about football is the tribalism of its supporters. When a big international tournament comes around that gets replaced by nationalism. For most of the players too.

romantic. Bit in the age of 350-odd thousand quid a week, not sure it still holds water. But then i can't prove it so i'll leave it.

i am actually really interested in how this plays out now. who blinks? have these clubs burned to many bridges? or are UEAFA and the FAs too tied to the broadcast money they provide?

@canefan yeah, but those global mech sales started with these teams being the popular ones to follow, not everyone buying those shirts are hard out fans watching every game etc

Those teams are popular because of one thing. Success. I don't remember people wearing Chelsea jerseys in my childhood, until Roman bought them and they won lots. ManU were set during the Busby years and were enhanced by the class of 92. Real Madrid and Barca, enough said. Same goes for Juve and the Milan teams. Liverpool were the biggest team of the 1980s and have won stuff lately. Arsenal were one of the teams of the 90s. Spurs are the lucky ones, having not won big since the 60s

whats tottenham won? they're 100% just a "cool" club to follow

in general you're right...but that success you talk about was spread over several comps, EPL, FA Cup, league cup, community shield, champions league, Europa League....how long can they live on the legacy of success if they were to be excluded from some or all of those and only be competing for one

The Premier League 14 need to divide and conquer and the big 6. The 3 America owned instigators relegated to 4th division (league 2), the other 3 demoted just to championship.

Kick them out entirely will force their hand.

@rapido why only to league 2? we had to reform and come up from the 9th tier

@mariner4life i honestly think it will depending on how pissed of the local fans are

there are alot of these overseas fans thats "support" these teams because "everyone else" does, they play in front of packed stadiums, when theyre allowed too...if those stadiums aren't packed and there is the impression these teams arent "cool" anymore....how long will those billion overseas fans watch....will the next wave of tallent want to play for these break away teams? some obviously will play for whoever pays them the most...but not all

I'm more in this camp. If this thing kicks off when fans are allowed back in, and at least 50% of local fans rebel, then this league will quickly become uncool compared to packed crowds in other leagues.

Let alone in 10 years time.

But, I also can see their being so much upfront money that the current establishment could break or concede before they 'win'.

To divide and conquer, not to make them cornered tigers.
                That would be my strategy.

First English team to win the European Cup and league double. Since then? A few FA cups and a UEFA cup winners cup in the early 80s. Like I said we are lucky to be invited, I assume because of late we have done quite well. But more crucial is our new stadium

@rapido First British club to win a European trophy - the Cup Winners' Cup in 1963 which was always the easiest to take out.

Wolves and Burnley were giants in the late 50s/early 60s and both nearly slid out of the league altogether in the 80s. Things change in football which is part of the appeal.

I think the main reason the ESL will fail at this point is that they have pretty much just made it up on the spot without really working out the details.

I think the main reason the ESL will fail at this point is that they have pretty much just made it up on the spot without really working out the details.

see, that can't be right. there is no way they have done this without having plans in place. these guys aren't that dumb

but they might be that arrogant i guess.

Where money is concerned, I'm sure they have done all of their homework

Discussion has been under way for a while but there has definitely been a rush by certain parties to announce it and declare it is happening as soon as possible.

The outcome will be fascinating. But these clubs are among the biggest, most famous, richest, most storied clubs in the world. They either think the breakaway can work or they are gambling on the current power structure making serious concessions

There is meant to be an EPL meeting between the other 14 clubs tomorrow. It is expected that they will agree that the "big 6" will have to leave the EPL at the end of the season. That's 19 less home games to generate revenue for those clubs. Who is going to blink first?

Leicester City to win the EPL again! 🙂

And don't forget the hundred of millions (billions?) of sets of eye balls that won't tune in without those teams involved.

So, watched BBC News at 10 last night about this. Could certainly be argued it was a stitch up, but here's how it went

                                        1. Explain situation and what happened and why
                                        2. Get in business editors to explain how this is better for Football business and talk about the hugely positive effect on Juventus & Man Utd share prices
                                        3. Interview lots of British fans. Unanimous disgust at it. Real anger, real venom
                                        4. Interview a Frenchman (I think) outside Arsenal. Talk about both sides, mentions it'll be better to see Arsenal play the bigger teams more often
                                        5. Interview Inter fan, Simon Wang, in Beijing (in Chinese). Overjoyed with the it. Doesn't want to watch his team play smaller clubs like Sparta Prague etc. Will get to watch Inter play Barca / Real more often..

                                        Get it now.

Asian money > the actual fans who go to the games and have done for generations.

@majorrage yep that was my initial guess. It's not a bad business plan

I think I read these clubs stand to make more each year than if they did the league/champs league double now

If course that comes at the expense of everybody else
