Bit off topic from the original post but can't find a Moana Pasifika 2022 so posting here. Team will be pretty understrength next year as license came through too late to sign most overseas players. They're going after Ardie as he still hasn't signed anywhere for next year. Nonu, Lealifano & Kepu main signings otherwise most will come from those who played Samoa/Tonga test matches this year. They won't be playing end of year tour as no MIQ spots, will train together instead. Aaron Mauger Head Coach, Filo Tiatia Forwards, Pauliasi Manu Scrum, Paul Downes S&C, cant remember backs sorry.

@trooa nice oil , I heard Sekope Kefu was in the running , but the Nonu and lealiafano are really good signings.

Good news. They'll both be pretty weak first could of years, but hopefully some improvement over time and better pathways for the islands. Can't see it happening, all the good players that comes to light will be snapped up on big overseas contacts cos SR pay is pathetic. But hopefully I'm wrong

If confirmed, I just wonder if Nonu is being tempted (and has the ambition) to use MP to move into a coaching role downstream. He'll be 40 next May?

Coaching is not for everyone but his rugby brain seems acute, his self-development is legendary, his longetivity ... to have returned and played ten Top 14 matches at Toulon, age 38-39 is staggering given the physicality of that league.

According to Toulon when they re-signed him in 2020 he was to be their "Le papa des trois-quarts"

In English that best translates as "Daddy of the backline". Works for me :face_with_tears_of_joy:

Mt Smart is expected to be named the home ground today. I think they will use Pukekohe or Bruce Pulman park as their training base or even the Warriors facilities.

I have a bit of faith he'll do ok, he was starting to get some good results with us, just too late, so hopefully he's learnt and at very least he's familiar with the comp and what it takes

@dice That would be great, although surprising, considering 2 of the 3 AFAIK are not eligible for any of the PI nations. I think only Enari is.

I wonder what the salary cap for MP and FD is compared to the NZ teams? Obviously none of these teams can compete with the European and Japanese clubs, but is it enough to keep a lot of NZ-based PI players from looking off-shore.

I think over $2 million NZD p.a. (split I assume) between MP and the Drua.

Both franchises will also be supported by their respective unions and private equity funding."

@steven-harris I'd assume major investors (NZR, World Rugby, private investment) will have Moana Pacifica board-level representation. Maybe NZR represents World Rugby on MP board, not sure on the politics there.

Suspect for MP and the Drua a salary budget is approved at board level as a percentage of projected TV and other revenue rather that an absolute cap. To be reviewed vs revenue and profit/loss after Season 1.
