As I say above, I have just recently read Turner's book on those 2 year's as coach.
Turner insinuates that Cairns tried to rule himself out of the world cup quarter final v Australia in 1996. Writes Cairns said he had an injury and stormed out of training without reporting to physio first etc. He did play.
Insinuates that he didn't truely believe in his abilities in pressure situations and tried to find ways out of them.
Not mentioned in the book, as before this timeframe, but there are similar rumours about him missing a test on the Australia 93/94 tour. Toe injury I think, and Australians mocked/sledged him in the next match. Where the false choo choo sledge rumours come from.
Cairns did at least eventually become a good player. Actually a great player.

Granted our best batsman averages over 50 I'd happily have his twin slot in at 4, average a touch under 42, play with more flair but less concentration and potentially have an unhealthy interest in horse racing.

For years I have being hearing about Conway the domestic run scoring beast. Personally I don't care if other people were previously in front of him due to residential status and the politically right thing to do is follow protocol. If the guy is that good and has the most recent runs on the board, pick the best player. I am sure others have a different opinion? Am I wrong though? Is Young better?

I like to think that once all the games in March got cancelled, he just went home and said to the missus... "well, cricket's done, let's get a-fuckin'".
