Any signs of locusts or four horsemen?

No, but Hori BOP was seen riding 3 metres waves on his blue and gold surfboard

Shouting "You're in trouble tsunami! You're in trouble now!" while throwing handfuls of lollies to the seagulls.

And ready to fight any non-locals who come to drop in on his wave.

Residents spot 'unusual' tidal activity following quakes

Barbara Shortland, who lives above Jacks Bay in Russell, said her and her husband, Murphy, witnessed some "unusual" tidal activity this morning.

"When we got up at 9am this morning the tide was out, but by 9:45am it was high tide. I checked the paper and it was supposed to be high tide at 1pm."

The tide had been out "ten metres or more," said Murphy Shortland.

"It exposed the mudflats, which are all covered again now."

When the tide came back in, it didn't come as a crashing wave, said Barbara Shortland. "It came back really flat, it was very odd."

She said another "strange sight" was the large number of car ferries sitting out near Tapeka Point, which usually reside in Opua. "It's really strange to see, but at least they're far safer here than sitting in a bay."

The two are feeling "safe and well" because they're up high, alongside other Russell residents who are "out on lawns and sharing balconies," said Barbara.

"We're all okay here, no panic at all."

Here's the latest update from the National Emergency Management Agency:

GNS Science has advised that the largest waves have now passed, and therefore the threat level is now downgraded to a Beach and Marine threat for all areas which were previously under Land and Marine threat.

All people who evacuated can now return.

The advice remains, for all areas under beach and marine threat, to stay off beach and shore areas.

Spent the day in the sun with a few hundred very bored kids, but not much activity in our estuary. Some nice swirling whirlpools, and surging water still going after the all clear, but no big action.

    Beer o'clock now
