It's very good. Everyone raves about the crayfish meatballs, but I personally think it is a waste of perfectly good crayfish. Can't remember what else was good but I think it was all good. They made a nice martini too. Looking at the menu I think the vongole spag with bottarga was very nice

yeah, some ingredients should be kept simple

a mate once made some mud crab arancini balls. yes they were great, but for all the work, just serve me mud crab and i'll be happier.

I like going to Belgian Beer restaurants and asking them to just steam me a pot of mussels with no sauces etc. You’d think I’d have just asked them for their 7 year olds daughters hand in marriage.

    Yes, yes and no.
Been a couple of times and it is good.
We seem to have enjoyed the same restaurants down your way so reckon that you will like it. Ben Bayly is good and his other outfit, The Grove, is also worth a visit.
Can't remember what I had, but last time there was about 8 of us and I think only one person was a bit disappointed - there is always one.

The Grove is excellent. They used to do a pick your own tasting menu which was fun. For some reason I was the only one who wanted duck liver parfait for dessert....

You can't go wrong when it's a TAC boy behind the grill! It's fucking choice that he's done so well.

@snowy hearing good reports about Ahi as well. Almost went the Saturday we went to Lvl 3 but ended up at Saxon & Parole instead.

I've not been to Baduzzi but have chatted to Bayly a couple of times at Taste Auckland and Restaurant month promos and he seems like a really nice dude.

Highly doubt that he’s behind the grill these days. Sous chef usually gets the heat on. Head chef just controls the pass. Celebrity Chef barely touches the plates let alone the food.

@canefan and contrary to what @crucial (correctly) wrote, Sid Sarawat is very hands on in the kitchen. I mean I haven't seen him peeling the spuds but definitely getting a sweat up over the hot plate at Sidart.

We're lucky in NZ that there are still opportunities to see our 'top' chefs preparing and cooking food and have a chat to them.

Yup, I have seen him more than once standing on the pass at Sidart. In contrast, I don't think I've ever seen Simon Gault Ben Bayley or Josh Emmett with a utensil in their hands...

A few that fly under the radar

Phil's Kitchen, Kingsland. Odd position, odd decore, excellent food from a Michelin trained chef

Paris Butter, Herne Bay. Used to be Vinnies, the food is very good, with innovative but not overwrought preparations

Lillius, Symonds St AK central. Relaxed quiet dining room with delicious food

    Cocoro, Ponsonby. Exquisite Japanese food

My favourite restaurant in AK would probably be Azabu in Ponsonby. Nikkei cuisine (Japanese Peruvian) is a match made in heaven
