@Rapido said in RWC 2027 in Australia:

Other conclusion is: The pressure on the host nation to re-coup their hosting fee means that fewer stadiums get used in modern tournaments.

My understanding is that the proceeds of the tournament flow to WR, not to Rugby Australia. RA have their $100m and that's all she wrote for them.

So the pressure is on WR rather than RA.

The problem with expanding to 24 teams and having 6 pools is that the playoffs become more complicated than they need to be.

@Bovidae surely that's not right. Wouldn't you separate pool winners until the Semis? Why have Pool A and Pool B winners playing in the quarters? Seems very weird

who wins Pool E and gets the armchair ride then?

    Edit:
Who will my team face in the pool stage?
That will all be decided on Wednesday, 3 December! The draw will take place in Sydney and will be broadcast on Channel Nine in Australia, but will also be available everywhere on the planet through other international broadcasters as well as online on RugbyPass TV.

There are six pool winners so need there will need to be two quarter finals where pool winners play..

    Wow
The WA government are right into their rugby (league and union) at the mo.
Primo Bledisloe and SOR fixtures; new NRL (27) team, and now kicking off the WC in 27 as well!
    Perth - a rugby town!

Winners of Pool E & F aren't necessarily an armchair ride.
If we were to go by today's rankings - and if pool stages resulted in seeds 1-6 being pool winners., and 7-12 being runners-up ... you could be facing Australia in "Round of 16" - lose, and being a pool winner not even make it to Quarters.
But yeah - not a fan. There is plenty of assymetry, just begging for people to complain.
What's with the "Pool C/E/F Best 3rd", "Pool D/E/F Best 3rd", "Pool A/E/F Best 3rd", "Pool B/E/F Best 3rd" - with E/F seeming to have multiple chances at first glance? I'd need to work through a theoretical tournament to figure out how that would work... if 3rd place in Pool E is the "Best 3rd" - which game do they go to? Presumably take the 4 best 3rd-places, and allocate them to the Round-of-16 games such that they fit?

Assuming all games play out according to ranking, you'd either:

    • play a 13-16 ranked team (Japan, Spain, US, Samoa) in Round-of-16 then a top-6 team in Quarter;
    • or play a 7-12 ranked team (Australia ... Wales) in Round-of-16, and another 7-12 in Quarter

Does that balance out? 🤷 Somebody's always going to whinge, and point at somebody else having an "armchair ride".

I want the 2007 RWC draw the SA got. Fiji then Argentina to get to the Final. Take that any day of the week.

Yeah - I started tracking out the potential best/worst cases (based on Pool-results matching existing rankings)
As already said - you could win your pool, then play Australia in Round-of-16 - never make a QF.
Or - win pool, then play Samoa, Argentina, and into Semis... hoping there's been an upset elsewhere.
