Ruben Love won the annual Surf to Peak in a time of 57.50, Richard Judd in second at 58.03 and Reed Prinsep third at 59.59.

Apparently Judd still holds the record for the fastest Surf to Peak time so Love has done well to top him this year.

@kiwibloke That is not likely to change whilst the lover affair with Alex Fidow and, to a lesser extent, Xavier Numia (who is simply a touch too small to be really effective) continues.

Fidow & Numia have very good balls skills - ideally you'd want your prop to have a bit of flair & be good at scrum time... as you say though, they are both a bit small as props & also lack a bit of scrummaging technique, not only do we need good starting props, we also need some depth in that area off the bench.

I doubt Fidow has ever been called small before.

I think Reed Prinsep deserves to have a Hurricanes' contract. He actually put in some good performances last season - he just isn't the most dynamic player, and will never be anything beyond a good stopgap option.

I didn't say he is a pigmy 🙂 reckon he tends to lack a bit of technique at scrum time.

Prinsep as we all know is only a plodder, no wonder the Crusaders got rid of him - waste of time having the bloke in the squad... I want to see a Canes loose forward trio that offers much more, really good pace & ball handling skills etc so they can link up quickly with our backs to keep the momentum going & they're clearly going to do their core roles well too.

Of course you want that. Everyone always wants the best for their team in every position - but there aren't a whole lot of players like that who are being left out (for the most part). If you want to leave Prinsep out the squad, you've got to pick another player that better fits those ideals, and then weigh up whether those strengths makeup for their relative weaknesses in other areas.

With the huge depth of players NZ have there has to be someone better in the country than him - the bloke just doesn't add anything... this is down to the head coach wanting him, I've talked to lot of people that can't believe he was selected as well.

The problem is a lot of people are essentially looking for a highlights reel player like Ioane or Savea (probably a bad example as they also do grunt work - but they want a player who can run like them) . They don't necessarily notice the grunt work players do. He makes a decent number of tackles, is a lineout option and is reasonably accurate in everything he does - and that can be more valuable. He is never going to be a world beater, but I can understand why a coach might want him in the squad - especially when the other loose forward options are all young guys with no experience (i.e. Howden, Laubscher, Iose).

Though it does become a problem when you have 3 or 4 of these no-frills players and start them all each game, refusing to make any changes, even when it isn't working.

      This.

Specifically, when you have him and Blackwell in the same 15, there are basically two players doing the same role, and your forward pack starts to lose enough go forward.

The first choice loose trio should include Savea and Flanders and who? Put Flanders at 6, Savea at 8, and play either Kirifi or Gibson?

No doubt you need those players that consistently do the hard yakka, yeah, Blackwell is one of those, but certainly rate his pace & skill sets better than Prinsep.

I like all those loosies - as you say, Flanders at 6, Savea at 8 & I'd have Kirifi at 7... Gibson is a good player too.

@kiwibloke I wouldn’t go with Kirifi, he was a giant dick last year and doesn’t deserve to start first.

I would go with Howden at 6 (despite his experience) Savea at 7 and Flanders at 8 with Brayden Iose being that impact loosie off the bench.

Yeah, he did act like a tool last year - but that's in the past, it's a new season, so hope he's learned from it as he's a top all-round 7.

@canes4life Wonder if he could have a role as an All Black assistant coach. Sense a reshuffle after February review. Good to be getting some of the coaches back as they will have a good knowledge of Northern Hemisphere.

Boyd was Tonga's defense coach during the 2011 world cup (when they defeated France), could potentially replace McLeod?

@canes4life NAS from the Melbourne Storm is possibly heading to Japan, surely he would be on the radar by a Kiwi franchise.

I doubt NZ rugby wants to pick up an anti vaxxer.

That would be just so much more trouble than it worth. Anyway he wouldn't be able to play under NZR, NZ Govt, or Aussie laws.
