New Zealand Rugby has scrapped plans to play Super Rugby night games in Invercargill, shifting the games to Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium.

Friday and Saturday night games for the first three rounds of the competition were to be played at Rugby Park.

However, after further conversations between the teams and NZR, it was agreed the facilities at Forysth Barr, including the roof, made it the team’s favoured option for night matches.

Thank fuck someone saw sense. Late night for the teams involved though as a bus trip from Dunedin back to Queenstown would be a good three to three and a half hours with a good run.

I am assuming that the second round of preseason games will still take place in Queenstown?

        That would be:
        Chiefs vs Blues
        MP vs Highlanders
        Hurricanes vs Crusaders

The latter two teams would then play each other in Rd 1 the following week.

Not if you take the top route there. Nice straight empty roads in the Maniototo. No cops. Cut the corner and avoid Alexandra.
              Just over 3 by car.

I feel a bit bad for MP because they'll probably get savaged a bunch of times by the Kiwi sides before they get a chance to secure a win against the Drua or any Australian sides. The beatings will cause disarray and who knows what that does to the organisation. But then again, who cares?

@crucial I'm sure they won't be looking to go through Lawrence and the windy road from there pretty much to Roxburgh. Although a midnight stop for a Jimmy's might be welcome, if anything were open!

There wouldn't be any traffic so if it's 3.30 cruising in a car it'll be 4 hours by bus, taking the Pig Route. Games finish near enough to 9, some after match formalities and probably a quick nosh up, freshen up, and they'll be lucky if they're on the road by 10.30, into QTN around 0230. Fuck that. It's like an NBA post game routine but they fuck off on private jets and fly all hours but have scheduled nap time the next day. And that's after a minimum 4 hour drive to get there. I'm sure the medical staff will figure out the best routine and that might be to leave after brekky and a few hours of free time at around 12, into Dunedin 4/4.30, quick trot around to stretch the legs then into the rooms.

It's also around half an hour to the airport from central Dunedin, then add in the check in time or whatever procedure there is when you charter a plane, and if they go hell-for-leather from the final whistle they might take off at 11 or 11.30. A half hour flight and then...nowhere to land as the airport would have been shut for hours by midnight.

@shark couldn't they just charter planes?

It's also around half an hour to the airport from central Dunedin, then add in the check in time or whatever procedure there is when you charter a plane, and if they go hell-for-leather from the final whistle they might take off at 11 or 11.30. A half hour flight and then...nowhere to land as the airport would have been shut for hours by midnight.

@shark Ok, didn't realise when Queenstown Airport etc closed at 12 or whenever., didn't realise there was a lot of check in involved with charter plane. I have never been able to charter one so I assumed they would just drive a bus to the steps of plane and let players climb on, I obviously need to reassess how I thought they worked!

I am assuming that the second round of preseason games will still take place in Queenstown?

                              That would be:
                              Chiefs vs Blues
                              MP vs Highlanders
                              Hurricanes vs Crusaders

The latter two teams would then play each other in Rd 1 the following week.

Only that it won't be in Te Puke. đŸ˜‰

I think that all teams will want to play a second preseason game to involve their ABs, and quotes from the likes of MacDonald seem to suggest they will be organising one.

Wallabies Tate McDermott and Hunter Paisami are the latest Covid-19 casualties at the Queensland Reds and will be forced to miss Saturday’s final warm-up match.

Instead of heading to Roma to face the New South Wales Waratahs, the duo will stay at home in Brisbane while team-mates fine-tune for the kick-off to Super Rugby Pacific.
Losing the two players comes on top of James O’Connor, Jock Campbell and Jordan Petaia all missing last Saturday’s 42-33 warm-up loss to the Western Force with the virus.

@dan54 To be fair, maybe you actually can just pull your coach up to the steps and roll on in. But I would assume there are some CAA rules and processes that still apply given you're using a public hub and sharing the sky with other aircraft. And there would certainly be some shagging about with kit.

Very difficult game for the Canes in our first one... just hope we can match the Crusaders in the scrums, otherwise it's going to be bloody hard yakka.

                                          This would suck

Australian and New Zealand rugby officials are mulling a rule change to allow Super Rugby games to start with uncontested scrums in the event of a Covid-19 outbreak this season.

                                          ....

Safety considerations mean props will undergo extra training and monitoring to make sure they are up to Super Rugby standard, but officials may also ask World Rugby to allow games to start with uncontested scrums in the event a team cannot field enough props to contest the set piece.
