Worth watching Brad Thorn. Another who's been through the Crusaders system and apparently prepared to wield the axe over "disruptive influences". Seems to be getting a few results - at least compared to last year.

Did you start a job in the Crusaders PR department and not tell anyone? 😉

How's Gibson going with the Waratahs?

Reds almost give it up and the Lions get a losing bonus point.

Chance Peni has been cited for his high tackle on Israel Dagg.

Brumbies wing Chance Peni could face suspension after being cited for a high tackle on Israel Dagg on Saturday night.

Peni collected Dagg around the neck with a swinging arm in the 19th minute of his side’s 21-8 loss against the defending champions.

Referee Jaco Peyper showed Peni a yellow card after deliberation with the television match official, but after further review the citing commissioner deemed the incident had met the red card threshold for foul play.

Dagg was forced to leave the field and remained sidelined for the rest of the match, while his replacement Manasa Mataele scored two tries to guide the Crusaders to victory.

Similar incidents this season have seen players receive suspensions of three weeks.

Obviously it's hard to compare across era's like that. The crashing of the Aussie teams, wildly fluctuating SA strength from year to year.. Then the addition of easy beats like the Sunwolves and Jaguares (ahem)

The NZ teams are relatively consistent. The number of matches played is the only change. So it's easier to compare coaches by how well they did against their contemporaries

I quickly had a look at the three of the more rated NZ coaches in recent years. This is the percentage against other NZ sides:

                Robertson 73%
                8/11

                Boyd 72%
                18/25

                Rennie 63%
                31/49

Smaller sample size for Robertson. However him and Boyd have great records.

                For context:

                Deans 72%
                31/43

There's not much point comparing to Henry. But here it is anyway:

                Henry 93%
                13/14

So with Tahs v Blues this weekend at Brookvale how many Blues go down with injuries this weekend? SBW would be short odds.

Meanwhile the whole reason for shifting the game from the SFS was to accomodate the A League Final ... which is being played in Newcastle... not the SFS.... great....

Brumbies winger Chance Peni banned for five weeks

Brumbies winger Chance Peni has been banned for five Super Rugby weeks by SANZAAR after pleading guilty to a dangerous tackle that wrecked Crusaders veteran Israel Dagg's hopes of an All Blacks recall.

Peni was cited after the Brumbies' Super Rugby loss to the Crusaders on Saturday, in which he was given a yellow card during the first half for his clumsy hit on Dagg.

Dagg failed a concussion assessment and he injured a knee when he fell akwardley after the hit by Peni, with the injury expected to keep him sidelined for several weeks.

His coach Scott Robertson says the veteran All Black is unlikely to play before the New Zealand Test squad is named on May 20 for three home Tests against France in June.

Peni only finished serving a four-game suspension for a dangerous tackle at the start of the year.

In his finding, SANZAAR Foul Play Review Committee Chairman Nigel Hampton QC said that Peni's previous record counted against him, although took into account his remorse and guilty plea.

"The Foul Play Review Committee deemed the act of foul play merited a mid range entry point of five weeks," Hampton said in a statement.

"The player has received two previous periods of suspension for similar incidents in the preceding 12 months, and the Foul Play Review Committee added a further week to the sanction for that aggravating factor.

"However, taking into account mitigating factors including the player's remorse shown on field and his pleading guilty at the first available opportunity, the Foul Play Review Committee reduced the suspension to five weeks."

Peni, who joined the Brumbies this season from the Western Force, had been pushing for Test selection for the Wallabies' series against Ireland.

He won't be available to play until after that June Test window.

I just saw the video. Red all day long under the new laws - can't believe they called that a yellow on the field.

This is getting me to wonder why we have a TMO. They need to get it right to be effective, and it does rob fans and players of the moment of joy (or sadness). Maybe needs to be to avoid howlers again, but it doesn't seem sensible that a tackle like that can be ruled a YC on the field.

Also, where was the TMO in the final Lions test??? We wuz robbed!

@taniwharugby Geez, that's a terribly written article. Clutching at straws.

The Major League Rugby competition isn't starting in 2019; in fact, it started two weeks ago.

American rugby is (still) of a low level; probably way inferior to that of Australia, and maybe even inferior to that of the Sunwolves. Who in the Southern Hemisphere and Europe would want to watch American teams being butchered in an expanded SR competition? Inclusion of American teams in Super Rugby would only serve the American audience (until they get sick of their teams losing to those of other countries all the time), and therefore, American sponsors. If Sanzaar wants to ignore the fans in the SH again, and goes for the American dollar, then they'll go ahead. If it wants to keep the competion interesting, or make it more interesting, for rugby fans in the SH, inclusion of American teams is not the way to go. At least, not until the quality of rugby in North America is significantly better than it is now.

If the likes of Pichot want to raise the profile of rugby in the Americas, and want to grow the game in both American continents, then organise an all-American competition. The Jaguares will be the champions for the next 5-10 years or so, although maybe Argentina will not be so keen? If being part of the Rugby Championship has lifted the level of Argentinian rugby, then maybe including the Jaguares in an all-American competition wouldn't be such a good idea.

And then the argument that Argentina's participation in the Rugby Championship has lifted the level of the Argentinian sevens team? How exactly? How many of the Pumas are currently playing for their Sevens team? I think it's a safe bet to say there won't be many.

Another thing: is 14,811 people watching a Premiership game between London Irish and Saracens really a significant crowd? Maybe in the US, but globally it isn't that much?

By the way, here's a better article about this subject:

American dreams for Super Rugby in secret strategy paper

TAB odds on winning the regular season and the title are quite interesting.

                                Regular season:
                                Canes $1.40
                                Crusaders $3.75
                                Highlanders $12
                                Chiefs $17

I reckon the Canes, while currently well placed, are pretty inflated - especially compared to the Chiefs. Canes have got a tricky draw from here - including away games against all three of these rival franchises. If we see Beauden hobbling off any time in the next few weeks, those odds will plummet.

                                To win the overall title:
                                Canes $2.25
                                Crusaders $3.75
                                Highlanders $6
                                Chiefs $6.50
                                Lions $9
                                Tahs $18

TAB odds on winning the regular season and the title are quite interesting.

                                  Regular season:
                                  Canes $1.40
                                  Crusaders $3.75
                                  Highlanders $12
                                  Chiefs $17

I reckon the Canes, while currently well placed, are pretty inflated - especially compared to the Chiefs. Canes have got a tricky draw from here - including away games against all three of these rival franchises. If we see Beauden hobbling off any time in the next few weeks, those odds will plummet.

                                  To win the overall title:
                                  Canes $2.25
                                  Crusaders $3.75
                                  Highlanders $6
                                  Chiefs $6.50
                                  Lions $9
                                  Tahs $18

I may have to get a tea and biscuits account.

Saders looks pretty undervalued there, given that they've hung in their with the injuries they have.

Lions have been really disappointing, and I can't see them getting beyond a home semi (if they make it that far).

@gt12 Problem with injuries is that every time you play you're likely to end up with another couple in the injury ward.

You've just got to hope that they're guys you can cover adequately.

One good thing about guys in the injury ward is that at least they're usually on the comeback trail and are not likely to get injured in the meantime.

The French tests are likely to shuffle the pack a bit given the expectation that we'll probably see half a dozen ABs injured, but otherwise allowing space for quite a few casualties to return.

Near two years of frustration, borne from prolonged concussions and the crippling ACL injury he continues to battle, have seen the world-class All Blacks hooker chart some clear future goals.

One of which involves joining the fire service.

Short-term, Coles has come to the realisation he will not feature for the Hurricanes this year – aiming instead to begin his on-field comeback with the Wellington Lions in the Mitre 10 Cup after a probable nine-month recovery.

Long-term, Coles is mapping plans to become a fireman in post-rugby life. When the time eventually comes to swap the ball for the hose, he is sure to be a welcome addition to the unsung industry.

Becoming a firefighter landed on Coles' radar largely because of former Hurricanes team-mate Reggie Goodes, the front-rower heading that way himself after being forced to retire earlier this year following a series of concussions.

Seen a post on FB that said Matt Matich has been called into Chiefs for their trip to SA.

That'll make a big dif to the Wallas come Ireland time - not a winning difference but still. Won't help them long term with Cheika refusing to build a back up 9 or 10, and Phipps doesn't count
