    probably a bit heavy given some others we have seen where contact around the head got less, but also deserving for the complete boneheadedness.

    Hope he said sorry.

      @taniwharugby As long as he tried to say sorry. That's the important part.

        Top end entry point, so his sanction ends up being half. It must have been a groveling apology. I'd add on weeks for presuming I was dumb enough to buy the "regain balance" nonsense. You won't see a clearer audition for Karate Kid this year.

          @antipodean On the other hand, I find it a bit hard to believe that he's thought, "I'm going to kick that guy in the face in an internationally televised match because who's going to notice and what could possibly go wrong"!

              Meanwhile in Melbourne the Sunwolves started well, and the game was a try each after 15. Rebels have pulled away though with a couple more and the next 15 minutes have been 14-3 in their favour.
              Was hoping the flashes of good that the Sunwolves have shown would give them confidence against a team of the Rebels level. Let's see if they can fight back.

                      Not a game in hand I dont think. As of right now Jags are 2 points behind Lions and both have 3 games left to play this regular season.

                          Just noticed that the Lions have the best attacking and defending record in the competition (431 points for, 223 points against), but their record is 7-6. Shows how relevant those stats are, but to have such a good points diff, so few points against and such a mediocre record they must have had some close, low scoring losses mixed with some hidings.

                            @cyclops Think you have to factor in which teams they have played and how many at home for the stats to have any relevance. Plus the fact the NZ conference is the toughest

                              Fark if my tipping couldn't get any worse, Brumbies deal to Bulls and Lions beat Stormers, 28-38 and. 23-26 respectively

                                    Sharks captain Ruan Botha has been suspended for 4 weeks (same offence as Moody and Franks, but he's a repeat offender)

                                    The SANZAAR Foul Play Review Committee has accepted a guilty plea from Sharks captain Ruan Botha for contravening Law 9.12: Striking with hand or arm, after he was red carded during his side’s match against the Jaguares over the weekend.

                                    The 26-year-old lock was one of three players shown a red card in week 15, joining Stormers wing Raymond Rhule and Brumbies hooker Folau Fainga’a.

                                    The SANZAAR Foul Play Review Committee of Nigel Hampton QC (Chairman), Stefan Terblanche and Stephen Hardy assessed the case.

                                    In his finding, Foul Play Review Committee Chairman Nigel Hampton QC ruled the following:

                                    “Having conducted a detailed review of all the available evidence, including all camera angles and additional evidence, including from the player and submissions from his legal representative, Adrian Montzinger, the Foul Play Review Committee upheld the Red Card under Law 9.12”

                                    “With respect to sanction the Foul Play Review Committee deemed the act of foul play merited a mid range entry point of 4 weeks due to the contact with the opposing Player’s head.”
                                    “The Foul Play Review Committee added 1 week to the initial sanction as aggravation for the fact the Player was suspended for a similar incident less then 12 months prior. However, taking into account the mitigating factor of the Player’s guilty plea at the first available opportunity, the Foul Play Review Committee reduced the suspension to 4 weeks.”

                                    “The player is therefore suspended for 4 weeks, up to and including 23 June 2018.”

                                      not quite sure how relevant pleading guilty should be (similarly saying sorry - or not) in being a mitigating factor

                                      IMO mitigating factors would be if the player slipped going into contact, a 3rd player involved, the guy with the ball was dropping at impact etc

                                      Guilty pleas, saying sorry, remorse are all things any normal person would do (or at least on the advice of their legal representative) after the fact when caught.

                                        FYI

                                        Regulation 18.6.3
                                        In determining the appropriate penalty under these Regulations, a Judicial Officer or Judicial Committee shall be entitled to take account of mitigating and/or aggravating circumstances. Aggravating circumstances shall include, but shall not be limited to, the repetition of a breach of a particular Bye-Law or Regulation.

                                        Aggravating Factors

                                        Regulation 17.19.4
                                        Having identified the applicable entry point for consideration of a particular incident, the Disciplinary Committees or Judicial Officers shall identify any relevant off-field aggravating factors and determine what additional period of suspension, if any, above the applicable entry point for the offence should apply to the case in question. Aggravating factors include:

                                        (a) the Player’s status generally as an offender of the Laws of the Game;[4]

                                        (b) the need for a deterrent to combat a pattern of offending in the Game; and

                                        (c) any other off-field aggravating factor(s) that the Disciplinary Committee or Judicial Officer considers relevant and appropriate.

                                        Mitigating Factors

                                        Regulation 17.19.5
                                        Thereafter, the Disciplinary Committee or Judicial Officer shall identify any relevant off-field mitigating factors and determine if there are grounds for reducing the period of suspension and subject to Regulations 17.19.6 (no greater reduction than 50%) and 17.19.7 (exception to 17.9.6 in case of lower end offending) the extent, if at all, by which the period of suspension should be reduced. Mitigating factors include the following:

                                        (a) the presence and timing of an acknowledgement of culpability/wrong-doing by the offending Player;

                                        (b) the Player’s disciplinary record and/or good character;

                                        (c) the youth and inexperience of the Player;

                                        (d) the Player’s conduct prior to and at the hearing;

                                        (e) the Player having demonstrated remorse for his conduct to the victim Player including the timing of such remorse; and

                                        (f) any other off-field mitigating factor(s) that the Disciplinary Committee or Judicial Officer considers relevant and appropriate.

                                        Footnote:
                                        [4] The Player’s disciplinary record in all competitions and (as appropriate) in other sports during his playing career from the age of 18 shall be considered by a Disciplinary Committee or Judicial Officer. In any case in which the Disciplinary Committee or Judicial Officer establishes that the Player has previously been found by a Judicial Officer and/or Disciplinary Committee to have committed any act of Foul Play and/or Misconduct then the Disciplinary Committee or Judicial Officer in imposing any sanction on the Player may in fixing that sanction take account of such offending as an aggravating factor.

                                          This is how Ruan Botha earned his red card:

                                          .

                                          He's lucky he didn't go a little bit lower, because then it would have been a 'striking with shoulder" charge (carrying a 6 week mid-range entry point).
