@tim Yeah, would have been pretty shit for the Blues - and particularly Blues supporters - if the Ioane brothers left. That tweet says nothing about Rieko; would he leave without his brother?

Super Rugby: Hurricanes confirm interest in Akira Ioane

The Hurricanes have confirmed they have considered making an approach for Akira Ioane.

Assistant coach John Plumtree admits he's keen on the Blues number eight as he looks ahead to the 2019 Super Rugby season.

He will take over the head coaching role from Chris Boyd, who has agreed to become director of rugby for English club, Northampton Saints at the end of the season.

Speaking to Andrew Gourdie and Jim Kayes on RadioLIVE, Plumtree revealed Ioane's name has been discussed as he looks to assemble next year's Hurricanes squad.

"There's certain things that have to be done now for next year regarding more the roster, players that potentially we need to target," he said.

"Certainly he was talked about and certainly he'd be a great addition for us but the word is he is still staying in Auckland to help them out, so good for him," he said.

Ioane could be seen as a replacement for departing number eight and captain, Brad Shields, who has signed for the Wasps in England.

The Hurricanes are currently riding a three-match losing streak after going down to the Brumbies on Saturday.

Boyd called the second half failure in Canberra, where they failed to register a point, as among the worst 40 minutes since his coaching tenure began in 2015.

But he did note the Brumbies were out to keep their season alive, with a loss meaning the ACT team would be out of finals contention.

"That's probably the worst 40 minutes of football we've played in four years really," Boyd said.

"I think at the end of the day, one team was desperate to stay alive and we've already qualified for the playoffs, it's just where we're going to play and who against.

"That doesn't excuse that performance but one team had more to play for than the other."

In better news for the Hurricanes, they could get three of the four star players who missed the game back for their home clash with the Blues next Saturday.

Boyd said he expected captain Brad Shields and All Blacks Beauden Barrett and Vaea Fifita back for the Kiwi derby.

The clear highlight against the Brumbies for the Hurricanes was captain TJ Perenara scoring a freak try by diving to intercept a Joe Powell pass in the corner.
