@gt12 The bad thing is that in reality it's supposed to be a Japanese team but hasn't that many Japanese players in it. Reality is also that if it had more Japanese players in it, it would be even more sh*t than it is now. In more than one way, that team is a joke.

It wasn't really thought through was it? The team doesn't fit into the Japan rugby set up so can't be either a next level between their club game and internationals or a de-facto Brave Blossoms.
Instead they get overseas players alongside dregs or development players from clubs.

Japan Rugby needs to decide how they want this team to fit in. What would be best for them is probably to use it as a step between club and country using national players that don't play overseas.

Dammit, this is going to be a serious discussion, isn’t it?

All JP won’t work due to club contracts, which weren’t negotiated when the team was introduced.

Personally I think they should have their funding pushed through the roof, then try to have a 50/50 mix, by slowly signing the better JP players - or paying their clubs for the priceless - and surrounding them with old heads to help them get around.

Reds to permanently wear maroon jersey in 2019

The club today announced at its annual long lunch that players will wear the traditional maroon strip for the entirety of next season in a nod to 125 years of rich Queensland rugby history.

The strip has become a fan favourite since being reintroduced in 2017 by former coach Nick Stiles for the team's clash with the Waratahs.

It was worn in both Reds-Waratahs showdowns this year and NSW introduced a similar heritage jersey this season to honour the occasion.

The maroon kit Queensland first wore in 1894 carried them through until 2006.

That's when the jersey transformed to the red strip the team has worn until now.

If there is one lesson in world rugby (with small w and r) since going pro it is that the domestic set up is key to the international results.
Everyone looks in envy at the the legacy Jock Hobbs left in NZ and it has played a major role in AB dominance once we settled on how to make it work.
England are hog tied by their clubs, Australia has no foundation in place, Scotland don't have the numbers, France is a shit show. Only Ireland took the hard hit to sort themselves out and look how it has benefitted them.
If Japan want to grow as an international team they need to take the opportunity offered by a SR team and use it well.

i.e. Aus rugby can't afford a new strip so they're using last seasons.

@tim That's a pity, but to be expected after he signed with a Japanese club for the Top League as well. Would have been great to have him back at the Highlanders.

That can be the only reason, as his replacement. So no chance for Fletcher Smith then.

Could still be space, depends if they see him/Debreczini as 15 option to. Looking at Chiefs discussion page, heaps of spots available for 2019 across all positions in backs except 9.

Cooper better re-sign Stevenson and I'd be wanting to lock up Nanai-Seturo as the other fullback option.

Had a quick word with Tana at the Northland v Waikato game today, only 3 x spots left to fill in the Blues..would not elaborate on which positions..!

He’s probably already locked in those 3 spots from the Auckland 1st XV competition. 😝

Seriously though, I don’t think many of the Northland guys would’ve done their chances any good. Might have been a few from the opposition that he was looking at though..
