Jed Holloway (Waratahs) suspended for 3 weeks for striking

The SANZAAR Foul Play Review Committee has accepted a guilty plea from Holloway for contravening Law 9.12: A player must not physically abuse anyone, after he was red carded.

Holloway has been suspended from all forms of the game for three weeks, up to and including Saturday, May 18.

The incident occurred in the 45th minute of the match played at Bankwest Stadium.

The SANZAAR Foul Play Review Committee of Adam Casselden SC (chairperson), Stefan Terblanche and Eroni Clarke assessed the case.

In his finding, Casselden ruled the following: β€œHaving conducted a detailed review of all the available evidence, including all camera angles and additional evidence, including from the player and submissions from his legal representative, Aaron Lloyd, the Foul Play Review Committee upheld the red card under Law 9.12.”

β€œWith respect to sanction the Foul Play Review Committee deemed the act of foul play merited a mid-range entry point of six weeks due to the World Rugby instructions that dictate any incident of foul play involving contact with the head must start at a mid-range level.

β€œHowever, taking into account mitigating factors including the player’s clean judicial record, the player’s expressed remorse and the fact the player has pleaded guilty at the first available opportunity, the Foul Play Review Committee reduced the suspension to three weeks.”

Holloway’s suspension rules him out of the Waratahs’ away matches against the Bulls (Saturday, May 4), Lions (Saturday, May 11) and Reds (Saturday, May 18).

@Stargazer Three weeks seems awfully lenient. I swear the judicial hearings must be massive piss ups.

@antipodean Nothing to do with the judicial hearing. The penalties, aggravating and mitigating factors are prescribed in the regulations and they have been applied correctly.

Although the act itself is despicable, I don't think there was really that much force behind the strike and it took du Toit a while to go down, which made me think that there may have been an element of theatrics in it. However, I'd like this kind of offence to have a higher mid-range (for example, 8 weeks instead of 6), just because I think it's filthy (regardless of the force used).

@taniwharugby Do you mean du Toit? No. I only remember a scrap between Akker van der Merwe and Schalk Brits.

I've covered this dribbling shit often enough I'm loathe to do it again. But getting time off for acknowledging the obvious and saying sorry like a fucking three year old shouldn't reduce the penalty.

Have you ever boxed? It's entirely possible to stun someone enough that it takes their nervous system time to crumple. Just like that brief moment after you hurt yourself to see just how bad the pain is going to be.

@Canes4life I hate losing to the Landers the most out of any team. Lived in Duns for 4 years and all my mates I met there are bandwagon Landers fans so I never hear the end of it.

@Yeetyaah I kind of feel your pain, losing to them in the 2015 final at home was a hard pill to swallow, especially when they were partying to the early hours right outside my flat at the time. Just can't see the Chiefs winning this one i'm afraid.

Even without Brodie I'm still not confident about that bet..

and the worst part of the equation is Cooper!!!

Sam Whitelock has re-signed with NZR, the Crusaders and Canterbury through to 2023.

He'll miss Super Rugby in 2020 to play for Panasonic in Japan, but will be available to the ABs in 2020 due to his long-term contract.

I like the idea of theses new contracts with sabbaticals to play elsewhere. Also, because he is back in May, Super Rugby rules require a minimum amount of games to be eligible to play in the finals matches, probably possible he misses the Super Rugby finals. Unless they change the rule. Or he doesn't play Super Rugby at all.
